Lindisfarne Castle at sunrise, with Bamburgh just catching the horizon beyond.
Built in the 16th century using stone from the dissolved priory, the castle started life as a coastal fort rather than the romantic landmark people know now. Its position on Holy Island made it part of a defended coastline, watching the North Sea at a time when raids and invasion were very real worries.
Did you know? The building was later transformed into a private holiday home by architect Edwin Lutyens, which is why it has that unusual mix of military strength and almost domestic charm.
Northern Perspectives captures real places across the North, from famous coastal landmarks to the small details that link one historic place to another.
