Nine Tides at the Mull of Galloway:

If the sea ahead is raging with swirling currents from the viewpoint at Lagvag, then you are lucky enough to be experiencing the spectacular natural phenomenon of the Nine Tides.

This is caused by the opposing tidal rips rushing round the Mull of Galloway 90 minutes after low tide.

However, legend says that the tides were conjured up by nine witches of the Mull of Galloway in an attempt to shipwreck a witchfinder on his way across the sea from Ireland.

In 2010 two divers were caught in this tidal race off the Mull of Galloway and were eventually rescued more than a mile up the coast- a twenty minute journey for the Lifeboat at Portpatrick.

Plan your visit to the Mull of Galloway. The lighthouse is open every day this week for the school holidays, there’s a fabulous view of the nine tides from the lantern room at the top:
