This week 6 years ago we welcomed our first guests 🤗 🤗
After completing extensive renovations on this seventeen hundreds cottage.
Becoming the latest custodians, we thought it would be interesting to have a little look back on its past, discovering that the previous owner’s family had lived here for several decades. The family first moved here between the ten year censuses of 1871-1881. George (41), Caroline (40), three daughters (13,11,3), two sons (7,1) and a lodger (bearing in mind the property would have been smaller)!!
Census of 1881 showed George head of the family was a shoe-maker and a beer-housekeeper, basically a landlord and as it happened this was The Crab and Lobster which was just around the corner in St Martins Square (today now house number 12).
He sounded quite a character, as published in the Chichester Observer dated 14th December 1887, he the landlord of the Crab and Lobster was summoned for having his beer house open for the sale of intoxicating liquors during prohibited hours. The Bench considered this a bad case and they decided to fine the defendant £3 and 10s, cost, with an alternative of fourteen days imprisonment. The Bench also refused to grant time for the payment of the fine.
Census of 1891 now shows Caroline a widow, therefore she is head of the family and both sons and youngest daughter are still living with her. She is working as a laundress from Four Priory Road and probably taking in jobs from the local vicinity, maybe from inns and hotels.
Come the 1911 census Caroline is still the head of family, at 70 years of age and her occupation is a midwife now. Only her two sons live at home and are 38, 31 years old.
Jumping forward to 1939 register shows the youngest son of George and Caroline, Frederick, his wife Jessie and their son are now occupying the cottage. Eventually their son becoming the last family member to live here as he never married!
