Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre Access is by a forestry track which flanks Ennerdale Water. For friends and users of Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre. This Field Centre is in Ennerdale, Cumbria.

Set in the heart of beautiful Ennerdale, England's remotest, quietest and least inhabited valley, Low Gillerthwaite rests at the feet of Pillar, Steeple and Red Pike. It is run by members of the Association which was established by students and staff of City of Leeds College of Education to commemerate its Diamond Jubilee.

Today marks the autumn equinox, and Ennerdale seems to have understood the assignment. 🌧️☀️

A Saturday at Low Gillerthwaite 🌲

A full house with Mountain Rescue staying meant plenty of cooking, cleaning, washing up, generator duties, admin… then home to feed my own lot before starting all over again 😂

Just a fairly normal day running an off-grid Field Centre in the middle of Ennerdale!

And yes… everyone got fed. Eventually. 😂🍳🍫

Even with our generator running in the background, you can actually hear this beautiful Peacock butterfly flapping its wings!

Perfect timing too, with the latest Big Butterfly Count results being released this week. 🌿

Another little wildlife moment at Low Gillerthwaite that made us stop what we were doing. 💚

Our generator keeps us going when solar and hydro can’t quite meet demand — but diesel isn’t cheap!

We’d love to increase our renewable capacity and become even more self-sufficient. ☀️💧

We recently spent a brilliant day canoeing at Ravenglass with Western Tides and absolutely loved it. 🛶

One of the best things about West Cumbria is the variety of ways to get outdoors — from the forests and fells of Ennerdale to the estuary and coastline at Ravenglass.

A fantastic day, great company and another reminder of how good being outdoors can be for wellbeing. 💚

There’s something pretty special about the valley as summer starts to disappear.

Quieter trails, changing colours, crisp mornings — and a whole Field Centre to come back to at the end of the day.

Low Gillerthwaite sleeps groups of up to 40 and is available for exclusive use, making it a brilliant base for walking clubs, schools, youth and community groups, universities, sports teams and groups of family and friends.

And because we’re a charity, every stay helps support Low Gillerthwaite and the work we do here.

How well do you know Ennerdale? 🌿

One of the things we love about being at Low Gillerthwaite is that no two days in the valley ever feel quite the same.

A misty morning, wildlife appearing when you least expect it, the river after heavy rain, or one of those evenings when the whole valley seems to glow.

Lots of great conversations, new ideas and exciting connections made — including some really exciting potential projects with the RSPB in the pipeline. 👀🌱
