🦭 SEAL SEASON – PLEASE GIVE OUR SEALS SPACE! 🦭

As we head into seal season, we’re asking visitors to Cleethorpes beach to keep their eyes open and give any seals they encounter plenty of space. Grey seal season at nearby Donna Nook runs from late October through December, with numbers peaking in November and early December. During this time, young seals begin venturing further along the coast, and we’re more likely to encounter them resting on Cleethorpes beach.

You may come across a young seal on its own, particularly one that has recently become independent. A seal on the beach is not necessarily stranded or abandoned. Seals regularly come ashore to rest and recover their energy. Mum may be out at sea, and the pup may simply be doing exactly what it needs to do. 💙

🦭 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU FIND A SEAL?

✅ KEEP YOUR DISTANCE – Stay at least 100 metres away where possible. If you come across one unexpectedly, move away calmly and give it a wide berth.

✅ KEEP DOGS ON A LEAD – Keep your dog well away from the seal, even if it appears friendly or unresponsive.

✅ KEEP CHILDREN BACK – Watch quietly from a distance and explain why the seal needs space.

✅ LET IT REST – Seals need time on land to sleep, digest food and regain energy before returning to the sea.

✅ REPORT CONCERNS – If a seal appears injured, unwell or in distress, contact Cleethorpes Resort Safety on 01472 323173 for advice. You can also contact British Divers Marine Life Rescue on 01825 765546.

🚫 WHAT SHOULD YOU NEVER DO?

❌ Do not touch, feed or attempt to rescue a seal yourself.

❌ Do not try to push or chase it back into the sea.

❌ Do not crowd around it for photographs or selfies.

❌ Do not allow dogs or children to approach it.

❌ Do not assume a seal pup has been abandoned just because it is alone.

⚠️ REMEMBER: Seals are wild animals and can deliver a serious bite if they feel threatened. Disturbing them can also cause significant stress, injury and potentially fatal consequences.

If you find a seal, the kindest thing you can do is give it space and leave it in peace.

🌊 Always return to the main beach at least 5 hours before high tide to help avoid being cut off by the incoming tide.

🚫 If in doubt, don't go out!

📢 Hear the sirens or tannoy announcements? Stop and listen carefully, and follow the instructions given by our Resort Safety team.

🆘 Cut off by the tide? Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Don't attempt to cross deep water or mud to get back.

🌿 Why are we digging up the saltmarsh on Cleethorpes Main Beach?

You may have seen us digging out areas of saltmarsh along Cleethorpes Main Beach and wondered why.

The simple answer is - we’re stopping the saltmarsh from spreading onto the main beach.

There is a designated area where the saltmarsh is meant to grow and thrive. Outside of that area, particularly across the main recreational beach, we need to keep the saltmarsh under control.

Saltmarsh is an important natural habitat, but if it’s allowed to spread unchecked, it can gradually take over areas of the beach that are intended for people to use.

So, the digging you see is part of ongoing management of the coastline. Removing saltmarsh where it shouldn’t be and helping to maintain the clear boundary between the saltmarsh habitat and the main beach.

🌊 It’s not about removing saltmarsh altogether, it’s about keeping it in the right place.

We know it can look a little strange while the work is taking place, so hopefully this explains why we’re doing it!

Main beach dog ban ends TOMORROW! 🔊

Cleethorpes beach is fantastic for dog walking, and from tomorrow, Thursday 1 October, the restrictions on the main beaches lift! Dogs may now access all beaches until Friday 26 March 2027 (Good Friday).

Dogs are of course free to walk all year round on the beach from Cleethorpes Leisure Centre towards Humberston Fitties all year round. If you are unsure of your dog’s recall abilities then please keep them on a lead, especially near bird nesting areas.

💩 Please ensure you have the means to pick up your dog mess with plenty of dog poo bags with you and dispose of your dog’s mess in a bin or take them home. Please do not leave it behind.
🦮 Look after wildlife: Cleethorpes is internationally important for wading birds. Keep dogs under control so you don’t disturb the wildlife.
🐩 Look after yourself and your dog: Cleethorpes has fast incoming tides. Leave sand banks six hours before high tide. Stay away from the mud.

THE GREAT BRITISH BEACH CLEAN WEEK! 🫡

Cleethorpes beach is ours to enjoy, let’s work together to keep it clean! 💙

From 18th–27th September, we’ll be hosting daily litter picks from the Resort Hub, opposite the Pier, and everyone is welcome to join us!

Whether you’re coming along on your own, bringing the kids, getting a group together or simply have 30 minutes to spare — every piece of litter collected makes a difference!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 All ages welcome
🗓️ Daily sessions throughout the week

We will be joined throughout the week by some local litter picking legends such as The Canoe River Cleaner, Frank Sparkes - North Wall Cleaner and PickWalks so why not come along too, get involved and help us make Cleethorpes cleaner, together! 💙💛

🌊 LOCAL GEOGRAPHICAL KNOWLEDGE TRAINING 🌊

Our beach is constantly changing - and so do the risks!

The Resort Safety team recently headed out onto the Whaleback sandbank and surrounding areas to update their local knowledge and coastal safety training. This proactive training helps us to understand the ever-changing environment to keep both the public and our team safe!

We refreshed our knowledge of:
• Changing creeks, sandbanks and mud
• Tides, currents and safe walking routes
• Environmental changes across the resort
• Water safety and 999 response locations
• Dynamic risk assessment on the ground
• How to share up-to-date local safety information with visitors

The Whaleback is a vast and constantly changing sandbank, and being aware of the conditions is vital. Regular training means our team can spot potential risks early, adapt quickly and help prevent people from becoming cut off, stuck in mud or caught out by the tide!

Know the beach. Know the tides. Stay safe. 🌊
