Just the latest thing our wonderful government is up to. 🤨
The Government is currently consulting on plans to allow local authorities to introduce a new 'Tourism Tax' on overnight stays in accommodation such as holiday parks, hotels, B&Bs, and campsites. This is already in place in some parts of Wales and Scotland and is being consulted upon in England.
Industry leaders across the UK have raised serious concerns about the impact this could have on destinations like ours. Estimates suggest the tax could add £50 or more to a typical family holiday. For areas on the North Somerset Coastline such as Brean, Burnham on Sea and Minehead, which rely heavily on affordable domestic tourism, even small increases in cost can make a big difference to visitor decisions.
Ultimately, this could affect all of us — not just accommodation providers, but every business that depends on tourism.
We are encouraging businesses to help raise awareness by sharing the attached PDF with your customers. It explains the issue clearly and provides a simple way for individuals to contact their local MP and voice their concerns.

If enough people speak up now, there is still an opportunity to influence how — or whether — this policy is implemented.
Thank you for your time and for supporting the future of tourism in Somerset.
