Spinners, Weavers & Dyers from Various Guilds Transform Theodore House over the weekend.

The first weekend in July saw the main Atrium area in Theodore House converted into what looked like a thriving workshop of enthusiastic spinners, weavers and dyers. Over the weekend of 7th - 9th July, Theodore House was the proud venue, now for the third year running, for this annual gathering of a group of very passionate ladies and gentleman from various guilds of weavers, spinners and dyers namely Bradford, York, Craven, Fylde Heddles & Treadles, Bowland and the Online Guild.

The time spent at Theodore House was occupied mostly with busy hands using spinning wheels, spindles, looms and lots of wool. There was plenty of interesting chatter about this important aspect of their lives, constant laughter, as well as the occasional time away relaxing on the outdoor terrace enjoying the superb weather, or the occasional walk around the idyllic Stonyhurst Estate… and why not, even the odd drink in the evening to complete the mood of lasting friendship and enjoyment amongst friends who share a common passion.

The 26 strong group all stayed in the ensuite bedrooms at Theodore House and were joined by a local non-resident guest who participated each day as part of the group. With breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as tea/coffee and biscuit breaks being the package that this returning group decided upon, it was only the energy, expertise, knowledge and craftsmanship of the many exquisite finished articles from this amazing group that wasn’t supplied by Theodore House and its team to ensure they all had a memorable time.

Ann Falkingham, the group organiser said, “we have had another brilliant weekend, the venue is fantastic with such excellent facilities. The central atrium filled with natural light is ideal for our activities and sitting in the garden spinning is idyllic. Ever since our first visit the staff have been so welcoming, helpful and very willing to cater for all our requirements. The food was excellent and was highly commended by the vegetarians amongst us. We’re all looking forward to next year’s event”

So successful is this annual gathering of talented artisans, that the group has already booked for 2024 with Theodore House, and more than half of the guests had already paid their deposit for the 2024 event to the group organiser whilst still on this year’s stay.

At Theodore House, we are delighted that the amazing spinners, weavers and dyers consider us as a preferred venue for their important annual gathering. We cannot wait to have them back next year.

Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland run a four-week course in Theodore House

The Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland held the first of a two-part jurisprudence course at Theodore House, each part lasting twenty-eight days. It was fantastic to be the chosen venue for the seven Canon Law Society students - two from USA, two from Ireland and three from the UK - who were resident at Theodore House for the whole 28-days, along with numerous visiting residential lecturers who imparted the varied subject material pertinent to the course.

During the four weeks the Theodore House team not only ensured that the stay for the hardworking guests was comfortable, but that they received three delicious, well-balanced meals, that the lecture room was fully prepared with what was required and adequately private and that they had a comfortable place to take their tea/coffee breaks as well as a place to chat and relax at the end of a complete and sometimes intense day of studying.

The Canon Law Society of Great Britain & Ireland is a Charitable Trust established by Deed of Trust and described as “The Canon Law Society Trust”. The Object of the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland is to foster and promote the study of and interest in the Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church, its administration and practice, including its relation to other branches of learning. The Society was founded in 1957 and in 2007 celebrated its Golden Jubilee.

The fantastic guests who attended the CLSGBI jurisprudence course mentioned that after their four weeks’ stay, how they started to feel like part of the Theodore House family due to the constant care, attention and excellent hospitality. They were delighted with their Theodore House experience, so much so that it is hoped that the second year of the CLCGBI course will be, once again, held at Theodore House.

We were delighted that two of the presenters from State of Mind charity, Jimmy Gittins and Ian Smith, recently chose to stay at Theodore House for two nights whilst they delivered an important Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training to various members of staff at a nearby college.

Mental health is a very serious topic for most people. We are seeing a dramatic rise in mental health issues, especially in the last few years. The need to better understand mental health and possible ways to support is paramount these days. Canterbury Institute host their retreat at Theodore House.

Theodore House was delighted that the Canterbury Institute chose its facilities to hosts its retreat for reading, studies as well as a well-earned get-away from the pressures of their ongoing study life in Oxford, during the first week of December. 27 postgraduate students spent three nights at Theodore House, where activities included talks, study sessions, reading periods as well as walking excursions around the beautiful Ribble Valley area. In the evenings, after dinner, the group we able to relax enjoying drinks as well as bringing their own music and entertainment to round off their day.

The Canterbury Institute is an independent centre for research and learning in Oxford. It aims at rediscovery of the academic vocation through truth and humility. Canterbury awards graduate scholarships and coordinates academic programmes that return academics to the wider purpose of the pursuit of truth.

Humility is fundamental to the academic vocation all the way down; omission of it in the work ethic of contemporary higher education impoverishes human development and the unique contribution of one’s academic discipline. In academia, humility means respecting the work that precedes or challenges one’s own, seeking appropriate collaboration when problems are multifaceted, and above all being willing to change one’s work habits, methods and opinions in dialogue with others. Ultimately, academia is a responsibility and a vocation in service of the truth.

The Canterbury Institute is separate and distinct from the University of Oxford. The Institute enjoys close ties with numerous scholars and students across the University, engaging in complementary research activities and providing independently sourced scholarships for graduate study within the University.

The Canterbury Institute guests were delighted with every aspect of their retreat stay at Theodore House, so hopefully we will have the pleasure of seeing them again as guests in 2023.

Theodore House was delighted to host the Ribble Valley Tourist Association’s latest meeting. A gathering of local businesses, all members of the RVTA, met at Theodore House to discuss the latest updates and business-related matters that concern the Ribble Valley tourism sector.

Amongst the distinguished guests that came from around the Ribble Valley were The Mayor of the Ribble Valley, Cllr Stewart Hirst, and his wife, Mayoress Elaine Hirst. Tom Pridmore from RBVC and Anna Dawson from Mrs Dawson’s Farm Park co-chaired the meeting. After the initial proceedings Michael Jackson, business manager of Theodore House, gave a short welcome speech introducing Theodore House’s wonderful facilities. The mayor then reiterated RVBC’s commitment to supporting local businesses and the local tourism industry. The mayoress noted the RVBC Charity Ball in November and the need for support from local businesses. Further proceedings addressed economic plans by the RVBC for the coming three years. After questions and answers the meeting was concluded.

Whilst the guests were arriving, chatting and networking, they were invited to teas coffee and a selection of Danish pastries before the proceedings began.
