This week at Sing and Sign West Cumbria...

Our Babes families have been exploring "consistency" and "repetition". We discuss how being consistent with routines, words, songs and rhymes helps babies understand what is happening next and therefore keeps babies calmer and more content.

Our Stage 1s have focused on "ouch" and all such useful signs such as medicine, ill, doctor and all better. Giving your babies the tools to tell you when they're in pain and *where* they're in pain is invaluable before speech!

Our Stage 2s have been looking at the sounds A-H as a gentle introduction to phonics. As part of our surprise bag we play with initial sounds of props to encourage listening for sounds that make up words.

This week at Sing and Sign West Cumbria... An explosion of signing from your little ones!!

Our Babes families have been exploring "shared looking" and showing how we can start initiating conversations with our littles ones based on what they are looking at now their eye sight is developing.

Our Stage 1s have focused on "emotions" this week, such as happy, sad, angry and frightened. Being able to help your baby name their emotions and validate their feelings is a vital part of emotional development.

Our Stage 2s have been focusing on "being helpful" this week and using signing and songs to help in those tricky moments throughout the day, such as tidy up time and preparing to go out. We have also started gently introducing our toddlers to the potty this week.

Take a look through the proposed timetable and visit our booking site to register your interest for that Stage (specify in additional information which venue/time you are interested in). The more people that register their interest, the more likely that class will run!

Tuesday’s Top Tip 😁… Babies learn so much about communication by observing how the people around them respond to their sounds and body language. And crucially they are motivated to keep trying by any positive reactions! 👏🥰

💙 Chances are your baby will have been understanding your signing for a while, but their own first attempts at signs might not look exactly the same as the one you use. For example, a baby might sign ‘more’ by tapping one hand on the back of the other, or on their arm, or even just by clapping! 👏🏻

💛 The accuracy of their hand shape isn’t what matters at this stage - it’s the effort to communicate that we want to celebrate and encourage! 🎉

If you think your baby has possibly used a sign in context, get excited! Praise them by saying the word and showing the correct sign again 🫶🏻 Be consistent with your signs - their accuracy will come naturally, just like it does with spoken words later on!

💙 Also don’t worry if your baby uses one sign for several words right now - that’s actually quite common. They’ve discovered that signing works to get their message across and so their next step is refining their signs and expanding their vocabulary 🥰

Remember to always:
🌟 Praise any attempts at signing
🌟 Accept any version of the sign
🌟 Consistently model your version so they can refine theirs
…and enjoy those magical moments when your baby communicates something new with you 💕👏🥳

Sing and Sign Babes is a 5 week course specially designed for babies under 6 months, featuring gentle music and rhythm with your pre-crawling baby, learn some great communication habits to enrich your relationship and start introducing some signs into your daily routines. It's ideal for those who are keen to start signing with their baby and is a wonderful way to start your Sing & Sign journey - only for £40!

Starting on Monday 1st June, our Babes courses will be running at:

Mondays (11:30am) at The Gather, Ennerdale Bridge (3 spaces left!)
Mondays (1:30pm) at St Joseph's Hall, Cockermouth (1 space left)
Thursdays (11:30am) at Tot Spot, Whitehaven (1 space left)
