In a historic first for the UK, the River Wye has been formally recognised as a living ecosystem with its own rights, including the right to flow naturally, thrive, and remain free from pollution!

The new charter is the result of years of campaigning to protect the river, which has suffered from severe pollution linked to sewage discharges and agricultural runoff.

Supporters hope the recognition will help strengthen conservation efforts and encourage greater accountability for those harming the river's health.

Head out along the Colliers Trail for a bike ride! This 9 mile trail is a fully waymarked circular route that is suitable for all ages and abilities.

The trail follows the old railway which served the many coal mines (collieries) around the Forest. There are connecting routes all along the trail to villages, picnic sites and other Forestry England sites like Mallards Pike and New Fancy viewpoint, so plenty of opportunities to see more of the Forest of Dean (and stop for a quick cake break).

We recommend starting from either the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre - Forestry England (where you can hire a bike from our friends at Pedalabikeaway) or Beechenhurst - Forestry England.
