Just a few weeks ago, we were looking across Newberry Valley at grass that was incredibly dry and brown - honestly, we can’t remember ever seeing the park quite so parched. Fast forward a couple of weeks, add some intermittent rain, and what a transformation! 💚

The pitches are looking amazingly good - in many areas there's lush, green fresh new growth. It’s quite remarkable how quickly nature recovers when given what it needs. No fuss, no intervention… just a little rain, some September warmth and suddenly everything is growing again.

This morning we waved our youngest grandson off for his very first day at school.

A little uniform, a new bag, and a big adventure! One of those moments that makes you wonder quite how the years managed to pass so quickly. Surely I'm not old enough to be a grandmother lol? 🤣 😜

It made me think about all the children we’ve watched grow up at Newberry Valley too. Babies who first arrived in pushchairs, toddlers discovering the play park, children gradually being given the freedom to explore on their own… and some who are now all grown up and returning with families of their own.

Perhaps that’s why family holidays and the memories we make together matter so much. Life moves on, children grow up, and suddenly those ordinary little moments become the ones we’d quite like to have back for an afternoon.

So, to all the little ones starting school for the first time this September .... enjoy your next big adventure. 💚

Towering above Combe Martin are Little Hangman and Great Hangman, two of the most distinctive landmarks on our stretch of the North Devon coast. Great Hangman rises to an impressive 318 metres (1,043ft), with cliffs around 244 metres (800ft) high, making them the highest sea cliffs in England.

Despite the rather gruesome-sounding name, “Hangman” is thought to have much older origins and may come from the Celtic words “an men”, meaning the stone. This explanation is rather less sinister than the tales of smugglers and executions the name might conjure up!

Today, the Hangmans form part of the South West Coast Path, offering some spectacular walking and incredible views across the Bristol Channel and surrounding Exmoor coastline. Little Hangman is a particularly lovely walk from Combe Martin if you don’t fancy tackling its bigger neighbour.

We’re incredibly lucky to have all of this almost on our doorstep at Newberry Valley and September, with its quieter paths and cooler days, is a wonderful time to pull on the walking boots and explore. 🥾🌿

My eldest grandson goes back to school tomorrow, while his two younger brothers don’t start until Monday. As you can imagine, this has not gone down particularly well! 😂

But it got me thinking about everything children learn during those long weeks away from the classroom.

Perhaps they learnt how to skim a stone, build a sandcastle that survives the tide (or doesn’t!), spot a crab in a rock pool, ride their bike a little further, sleep under canvas, or pluck up the courage to say hello to another child in the play park.

Summer holidays have a wonderful way of building confidence and independence without children even realising it. They explore, take little risks, make new friends, solve problems and discover more about the world around them.

So, as the school shoes go back on and the backpacks come out again, here’s to everything they learnt this summer that will never appear on a school report. 💚

🌿 And just like that… September is here.

There’s a noticeable change at Newberry Valley once the summer holidays come to an end. The play park is much quieter, the days feel more easy-going and there’s suddenly a little more space everywhere.

We love the buzz of the summer holidays, but September brings its own kind of pleasure. The beaches are quieter, the roads a little less busy and it’s a wonderful time for walking, exploring North Devon or simply sitting outside with a coffee and enjoying the early autumn fresh air.

There’s still plenty of life around the park. In fact the recent rains have awoken nature after the hot, dry summer and the grass is growing again. Hopefully there's plenty of lovely weather ahead - enjoyed at a slightly gentler pace.

For many of our guests, September is their favourite time to be here. We can understand why. 💚

It's a lovely view looking down the Combe Martin valley, with the village winding its way between the green hills until it finally meets the sea. 💚

Combe Martin is said to have England’s longest village street and from up here you can certainly see why! Rather than being clustered around one centre, the village stretches along the valley, eventually arriving at our lovely little bay.

And just up the road from the seaside is Newberry Valley, a short stroll from the village shops, cafes and beach. 🌳

Sometimes it takes a view from above to remind you just how special our little corner of North Devon is.

Our beautiful new alpacas here at Newberry Valley recently came to us from the wonderful Kate & Simon at Mullacott Alpacas and tomorrow, Sunday 30th Aug, they’re opening their doors for their annual Open Day!

If you’re looking for something a little different to do, pop along between 10.30am and 3.30pm. [NOTE: Dogs can frighten the alpacas and won’t be allowed into the Open Day]

There’ll be lots of FREE activities, a chance to learn more about these gorgeous (and rather characterful!) animals, and plenty to do under cover if the North Devon weather decides not to cooperate! ☔🦙

Yesterday I shared a few very amateur thoughts on taking lovely holiday photos and today I thought I’d hand things over to someone who actually knows what he’s doing! 😂

We’re lucky to have some very keen amateur photographers locally who regularly capture wonderful images of Combe Martin and the surrounding area.

I’m certainly no photography expert, but when you’re surrounded by North Devon coast, countryside, woodland, wildlife and those beautiful blue skies, half the work is already done for you!

So, here are a few things I’ve noticed that can make a holiday photo just that little bit more special…

> Make the most of early mornings and evenings - that lovely soft golden light can transform even the most ordinary view.

> Look for the little things - a wildflower beside your pitch, reflections on the lake, and lots of happy faces

🌿 Frame the view - trees, tent doorways and even caravan windows can make a natural frame for a photograph.

😂 Don’t worry about perfection - windswept hair, children with sandy feet, dogs refusing to look at the camera… that’s often the reality of a holiday, and probably the bit you’ll smile about years later.

And finally, remember to put the phone down occasionally and just enjoy the view!
