Our Festival of Wine runs from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th September, and rather than bombard you with a complicated programme, we thought we’d give you a flavour of what we have planned.

The idea is simple: some wonderful wines, some very unusual bottles, and a chance to enjoy them in good company.

FRIDAY — RIOJA NIGHT | 5pm–9pm

We’ll be opening some rare and highly regarded wines from Miguel Merino, one of our favourite Rioja producers.

Expect La Ínsula, La Loma and Gran Reserva, amongst others.

This isn’t a formal tasting. There’s no need to arrive at a particular time — just turn up, find a seat and enjoy some seriously good Rioja.

SATURDAY — A DAY OF MINI-TASTINGS

Throughout Saturday we’ll be running small, informal tastings exploring Bordeaux, Burgundy and Italy, with both whites and reds.

And we’re going back in time…

Among the Bordeaux we’ll be opening are several wines from the 1974 vintage, including old Margaux and Graves. Bottles of this age are always an adventure — and opportunities to taste wines with more than half a century behind them don’t come along very often.

There will also be informal fizz tastings during the day for those who prefer their wine with bubbles.

SUNDAY — AND ONE RATHER SPECIAL BOTTLE…

Sunday will give us the opportunity to revisit some of the wines from Friday and Saturday — along with a few other things we decide simply deserve to be opened.

But we are saving something rather special.

At some point on Sunday, we intend to open a bottle of Château Léoville Poyferré 2003, Saint-Julien, 2ème Cru Classé.

A genuinely great Bordeaux from an extraordinary vintage — and one we are very excited to share.

There will be more wines, more surprises and probably a few changes of plan as the weekend develops. That’s rather the point.

No pomp. No wine snobbery. Just three days of opening interesting bottles and sharing them with people who enjoy wine.

After all, the Old Windmill Wine Society was founded in the belief that good wine is best discovered together.

We’ve been having Thursday afternoon pub crawl / market research session - and what a fab run it was! The Old Dyer’s Arms, The Hearsall and then rounding it off with a visit to The Broomfield to see our old friend Ange and the top pup-pooch Ted!

The RSPCA branch in Coventry says baskets full of kittens and cats are being dumped at their centre.
