There's always lots of negative press on bathing water quality, so let's shout about the good stuff. The bathing water testing season has started, and the Environment Agency's official results show EXCELLENT water quality levels for Stoke Gabriel, Dittisham, Dartmouth, and Castle Cove. Totnes still has poor quality water in the river, but is approaching the sufficient level. https://environment.data.gov.uk/bwq/profiles/ has all the data.

What are your thoughts on Dartmouth? 🚢🏰🌿

Tucked along the River Dart with castles, coastal paths and colourful boats, this South Devon town is full of reasons to stay a while. Here are some of the best things to do in Dartmouth for 2025:

🏰 Explore Dartmouth Castle, guarding the estuary since the 14th century.
🌊 Take the ferry to Greenway House, Agatha Christie’s summer home, set in peaceful gardens.
🚂 Ride the steam train from Kingswear to Paignton – or try the full Round Robin route!
⚓ Visit Bayards Cove Fort, a tiny but free Tudor-era defence point by the harbour.
🧭 Browse Dartmouth Museum to learn about smugglers, naval officers and early steam engines.
🌳 Relax in Royal Avenue Gardens, filled with fountains, rose beds and an 800-year-old yew tree.
🛶 Cruise the River Dart to Totnes, with live commentary and riverside views the whole way.
🏖 Head to Blackpool Sands or Slapton Sands, two of Devon’s most scenic beaches.
📸 Walk to Sugary Cove, a quiet shingle bay right beside the castle.
🐦 Stroll the Dart Valley Trail to Dittisham or Kingswear for wildlife, river views and ferry links.
🍴 Try breakfast at Café Alf Resco, veggie lunches at Embankment Bistro, or a harbourside drink at the Royal Castle Hotel.
📚 Pop into Compass Books, a cosy secondhand bookshop in the heart of town.
🧱 Tour Britannia Royal Naval College, where Prince Philip first met Queen Elizabeth.
🌶 Visit the shops – from fudge at Good Intent to samples at Salcombe Gin Distilling Co.
