The animals are a big reason for guests coming to visit the farm.
Being out in the quiet calm of the country with stunning views, nature and our friendly community of animals.
One of the favourites are the peacocks. The colourful noisy birds who love to inhabit the Chaff House decking and rest on the hot tub.
If you are lucky they will eat peanuts from your hands.
Pea fowl are ground nesters and although they lay eggs every year only one chick ever made it to maturity. Usually the eggs are stolen by foxes, or badgers 😢
Last year 7 chicks hatched out between the two pea hens but with no way to keep them safe from
predators all were lost within a few weeks of being born.
This year we decided to take positive action. When the pea hens were nesting, we found one of the nests and swapped the eggs for dummy eggs.
Our intention was to try to incubate them although we had never done that before.
As luck would have it one of our chickens went broody that very day, dutifully sat on someone else’s eggs….
And three weeks later became mum (or surrogate mum) to three baby peachicks ❤️❤️❤️
