How lucky are we to live by the sea πŸš‚πŸš‚

I knew exactly what I had to do when I saw this! πŸŒ…

I woke up early this morning, checked Blenheim Cam and spotted that familiar ribbon of mist drifting out from the Exe Estuary and across the sea.

It’s a sight I’ve been waiting a long time to capture again. In fact, it’s been around three years since I last managed to photograph conditions like this. So there was only one thing for it. Grab the drone and head up the sea wall!

What you’re seeing is caused by the difference between the water temperature and the air above it. At this time of year, the sea and estuary still hold onto much of the summer’s warmth, but overnight air temperatures can suddenly drop.

As that colder air passes across the warmer water, moisture evaporates from the surface. The moist air then meets the colder air just above it, cools and condenses into millions of tiny water droplets. The result is this incredible low-lying mist that looks almost as though the water itself is steaming.

It’s a bit like seeing your breath on a cold morning, just on a much bigger scale.

With light winds, the mist can gather into these long bands and slowly drift out across the sea. Add a sunrise behind it and you get mornings like this.

Definitely worth the early start! πŸ“Έ

Have you ever seen the mist rolling out from the Exe like this?
