Sea Salt Cottage - Deal, Kent

Looking for a walk that combines coast, countryside and history? The route from Deal to Sandwich is a great way to explore two of east Kent's most characterful towns. Covering 6 miles (9.65 km), the walk follows the seafront at Deal before heading inland along the peaceful River Stour into medieval Sandwich.

Along the way, you'll pass Deal Castle, enjoy views across the coastline, and have the chance to spot wildlife around the river and surrounding wetlands. Once you reach Sandwich, why not explore its historic streets or stop off at one of the town's many cafés or pubs for a well-earned refreshment?

Many of you will have already met him (or at least spotted him at work through the pass), but it’s about time we officially welcomed our new Head Chef, Greig Hughes.

Greig comes to 81 with a ton of experience behind him, having worked in some brilliant Kent kitchens including Rocksalt in Folkestone, The Swan in West Malling, and our own Samphire in Whistable, as well as picking up two Taste of Kent Awards along the way.

He was also the man behind Folkestone’s Bao Baron - which perhaps gives you a clue as to the kind of cook he is. Big flavours, plenty of creativity and influences from all over the world, alongside a real love of seasonal produce, baking, foraging and fermenting.

He’s already been getting stuck into life at 81, getting to know our customers and suppliers and relaunching our menu - which, we’re very happy to say, has gone down rather well.

We’re very pleased to have him at the helm. Welcome, Greig.
