WALES DESIGNATES ITS FIRST SITE OF SPECIAL MYTHOLOGICAL INTEREST

Prize-winning and Eisteddfod champion Bard to unveil plaque and present an englyn at the Hawk and Buckle, Llannefydd

LLANNEFYDD, DENBIGHSHIRE, 26th October 2026. The Hawk and Buckle Inn has been designated the centre of the first Site of Special Mythological Interest in Wales.

The designation comes from Mythical Wales, the project connecting Welsh legend to the real places it came from. Mythical Wales is built by Secret Planet Ltd alongside Excalibur, a Welsh Arthurian feature film bringing fantasy and legend back to the country where it began.

The plaque is the marker of the scheme. It tells a visitor standing in a real place that the ground under them carries a story, and takes them into it. The Hawk and Buckle is the first site in Wales to carry one.

On October 26th at 7pm, Y Prifardd Aneirin Karadog, newly-appointed Minister for Mythological Affairs by Mythical Wales, arrives at the inn to unveil the official plaque. With sword and pastwn (poetic staff) in hand, the bard will present the Hawk and Buckle with an englyn, a strict-metre Welsh verse composed for the occasion and given to the inn to keep for the community.

The Hawk and Buckle was chosen for what it is rather than for a single legend attached to it. Welsh mythology was spoken long before it was written, and it was recited in rooms like this one. A seventeenth-century inn on a hilltop in a village of a few hundred people, in a county thick with legend, is where the telling actually happened. The designation marks the inn as a gateway into the stories of the surrounding landscape, with the plaque denoting the importance of the area and the legends around it.

Dan Freeman of Secret Planet said: "Wales owns one of the richest bodies of mythology in Europe and this plaque marks it. We want the world to come here, visit these places, experience the culture and listen to the stories that gave fantasy to the world."

Y Prifardd Aneirin Karadog said: "Every legend in Wales was sung or recited out loud before anyone wrote it down, and most of it was told in a room like this one. An englyn is four lines and a thousand years of practice. There is no better place in Wales to put the first one!"

Paul Harris, who runs the Hawk and Buckle, said: "People have been telling stories in this bar for over three hundred years. We are proud to be the first place in Wales with a plaque on the wall that says so. Iechyd da!"

The event will feature local band The Cheesecutters, and a short talk from film director Dan Freeman on the upcoming film production Excalibur. There will also be facepainting and balloon modelling for children.

The evening is also the official launch of Mythical Wales (Cymru Fytholegol). Two other Sites of Special Mythological Interest are announced the same day: Cwm Elan (Elan Valley) and the Pembrokeshire coast centred on Manorbier Castle.
