Standing on the banks of the River Clwyd, Rhuddlan Castle remains one of the most compelling examples of late 13th century military architecture. Commissioned by Edward I in 1277, its signature concentric design, featuring a stark diamond shaped inner ward, marked a turning point in medieval fortress engineering. To supply the stronghold, Edward’s engineers undertook a monumental feat for the era of straightening the River Clwyd to grant sea access directly to the castle gates.

Located just a 20 minute drive from our shepherd’s hut, it offers a quiet, contemplative afternoon trip. You can spend an hour or two tracing the stone ramparts, soak in the architectural details or simply take in the panoramic views across the Denbighshire landscape.

After stepping back through centuries of Welsh history, return to the hut, stoke the fire, and settle down with a good book for the evening.

Change to opening hours

We will be serving food and drink in the day time wednesday onwards with a lunch menu.

In the next month we will also be launching afternoon tea service, just have a few events to do first!

Also, this week only, we are open from 18:00 monday and tuesday as we have events on.

Next week monday and tuesday will remain closed.

Photos from the Farmhouse ♥️

We’ve been tidying up the boot room. Bleddyn had the idea of using slate tiles for the sink splash back after seeing similar during my birthday trip to Erddig. The little cupboard is an attic find and it has a metal lined cold box and a CC41 mark on the back!

This room was called the dairy before, maybe something to do with the room next door that still has the cheese press stones in their original oak frames. The pink cupboard is original to the room, just moved along slightly

Sioe Eglwsbach Show 2026

Agricultural show in a beautiful part of North Wales, came home wanting some goats, more sheep, definitely more flowers, to take up more crafts and seeing if we can get one of our old tractors up and running again
