Silver Wells Aire

Silver Wells Aire Welcome to the Silver Wells Aire. This is a temporary stopover for self contained motorhomes. Note. This is an Aire with no disposal facilities.

As this is a working farm with crops, all we ask is that no grey/black waste or rubbish is disposed of on site. A link to available disposal sites on an interactive map are shown in the link below. https://www.campa.org.uk/waste-disposal/

As mentioned yesterday, this weekend is not looking good weatherwise. If you are on the move on Saturday, plan to park up early and get yourselves off the road before it all gets too hideous. Try to stay away from the high areas and tuck yourself into a valley or somewhere relatively sheltered. If it is all too much, booking yourself into a hotel / B&B is not the worst idea. Failing that parking up at a nice pub / restaurant is another good option for sitting this out (Britstops is a good site for finding options). If you are in an exposed spot, face the vehicle into the wind and turn the music up loud. Sunday will remain pretty blustery so don't try to go back on the road until the winds calm down. The good news is that Monday and Tuesday are looking like much nicer days. Stay safe 🙃

STORM DAVE . . .

*Friday April 3rd 11:50

Windy says these are the MET OFFICE warnings so don’t be giving me any grief as I’ll just block you ok

Anyway. As you can see there’s a lot going on Saturday and Easter Sunday with wind, rain, wintry showers and snow for some

I’m expecting to see an AMBER somewhere but let’s wait and see

Meantime I’m chillin the now as it’s gonnae be a long weekend for sure and I’ll get some more updates done later on (if yer sitting waiting, you can always scroll down through my page)

Easy now 👀🌪️🌧️

So Saturday night into Sunday morning is not looking too good. If you are in the north of Scotland we recommend you get into a sheltered spot and hunker down overnight (the West Coast / Skye looks particularly unhealthy). These are going to be S/SW winds so tuck in somewhere leeside. There will be another weather update closer to the time. If your plans are still flexible, plan your route over the next day or so to find a 'better' spot.

If you are planning a ferry late Saturday or through Sunday i would think again, most will be off.

Also if you are planning dragging a caravan anywhere, i would not bother, unless you want to rescue it from Bergen of course.

One of the most useful websites for motorhomers / campervanners has got to be the Campa site. We've put this up before but we'll worth sharing again

https://www.campa.org.uk/

Silver Wells is a Campra accredited site. That mainly means that we can host up to 5 self contained motorhomes / campervans for up to 3 days. There's no need to book - you can just show up (although it can get busy in midsummer so phoning ahead on the day is worthwhile then)

We do have certain safety stuff we have to do as hosts and we are insured for having our visitors to stay. To be fair, our fee mainly pays for the insurance bill and that's OK. As far as we are concerned, the site is a facility for visitors to come enjoy our part of the world which we think is rather gorgeous (we might be slightly biased!) and it's not about making money. To use a Campra site, visitors need to sign up as a member. This is free and should only take a couple of minutes. The best thing is then you can easily find all the other Campra sites so we do recommend signing up which you can do once you arrive. The link to Campra membership is below and I will pop the search4sites campra filter in the comments.

It was on average minus 3C for us last night (currently sitting at minus 1C at midday). A gritter has just along our road (Prority 3) so there's a good chance that a lot of roads near us will become safer. Last night, northwards roads between ourselves and Tain were 'good' and to Dornoch 'passable with care'. Southwards on the Black Isle was 'good'. We aren't expecting any more snow here at Silver Wells but that might not be the case further north or East. Stay safe and cosy. The snow is a bit 'fluffy' for building snowmen but give it a go if you are 'stuck' at your current Base.

Amber warnings from the met office for further snow remain in place through Sunday and Monday for much of the area.

Inverness, the Great Glen, Mull, Lochaber, the southern and western Cairngorms, Skye and the Hebrides are under a lower yellow warning.

Within the amber warning area a further 15-20cm is possible for some spots.

Snow showers ease into early next week but with some severe night frosts developing across the mainland.

As we were saying - stay cosy and warm! Amber warnings are a lot more serious. Even locals will assess if staying home i...

As we were saying - stay cosy and warm! Amber warnings are a lot more serious. Even locals will assess if staying home is merited, so don't feel bad at hunkering down for a few days if you need to (we are a bit exposed so find a nice sheltered site - that's what I do anyway 😆😇)

AMBER weather warning for Friday and Saturday . . .

*New Years Day 13:10

Windy says I’m no’ bumping ma gums but I did say on Monday I thought the warnings would get extended (both in area and time)

Today’s YELLOW remains unchanged but we now have an AMBER for Friday & Saturday, and the YELLOW has also been extended as well

Like ah said before we all know it’s winter, we all know we live in Scotland, and it’s January, so to be expected really . . . But I’m a FORECASTER and I try and FORECAST the weather so YOU can sort yer s**t out and plan out the days ahead, but please feel free to leave a comment that says it’s winter, or we live in Scotland blah blah blah, and I’ll quite happily block you for being a fukw1t ken

Wishing all our visitors a Happy New Year. May all your travels be easy, interesting and fun. A cold few days for us in the North of Scotland just now, so stay cosy and stay safe. Slàinte Mhath 🥳🎉🥂

At the moment our local weather forecasters are not too excited. It's Winter in Scotland and these are fairly 'normal' conditions. A yellow warning sounds awful but really it's about being aware that you might meet some snow. If you are used to driving in snow then this isn't going to be an issue (high routes or localised areas might get a few inches). If this is your first time driving in snow, take it slow and steady: avoid touching the brakes if you can and be aware of your visibility (dipped headlights are better than full in driving snow). Give yourself a generous stopping distance if there is a vehicle in front and follow their tyre tracks. Don't be afraid to pull over if it's too much. The road will be there tmrw. Plus, you get to play in the snow so make snowmen and snow angels and take pretty pictures. Stay safe and stay warm (hypothermia can sneak up on you slowly so keep dry and cosy!)

It's been a bit windy again. And to be fair, that's pretty standard in the north of Scotland at this time of year. There are two local facebook weather pages that pretty much cover the whole of Scotland. These are worth giving a follow while you are in this part of the world.

For the North, and the page that covers us, we recommend Highland, Islands, Moray and Aberdeenshire Weather Highlands, Islands, Moray and Aberdeenshire Weather

The amateur metrologist (Lee) behind this page lives in Carrbridge and has a genuine interest in knowing what's coming.

I will pop the link to Windy Wilson's South of Scotland weather page in the comments below.

Weather & general information mostly for the north of Scotland.

Sometimes i throw in non weather news and show weather related stories from across the world.

It's not always about the weather 😀
