What is the purpose of a Fruit Cage?

In general, Fruit Cages are to keep the birds out – but, in a new twist, we are using ours to keep birds in!

The story so far:
A farmer sent his baler to a local agricultural maintenance firm unaware that it was also home to a blackbird’s nest which contained four chicks that were on the point of fledging. Our daughter, who works there, took them under her wing and has been a substitute mother to them for the past week, training them to take a blend of chick crumbs and cat food from a lolly stick at two-hourly intervals.
Now that the time has come for them to stretch their wings, they have been delivered to Inglewood House’s fruit cage which will be their home for the next week or so prior to their release into the greater world that is South Norfolk.
Bertie, our adopted feral cat, has shown a polite interest but kept his distance – we hope he is just as restrained when they are released!

Recycle, Re-use, Re-Chicken!

We always try to recycle, re-use or re-purpose anything we have so it was fortuitous that, shortly before the chickens needed a larger dust bath, the lid of an old cold frame caved in. Not wanting to throw away a perfectly good frame, we gave it a new lease of life - much to the chickens’ delight!
Madge was so keen to try it out, she even joined in with the distribution of the soil prior to allowing the others to give it a go!

After the heavy snow of yesterday, it looks as if it is beginning to thaw a little, as we can now see at least a bit of the metal chicken on the hedge.
Fortunately our real chickens are nice and warm in their covered run, with lots of things to keep them amused, although we have had to defrost their water dispensers each morning.

Our chickens loved the 'fascinator' I hung up for them so much that I have gone ahead with a few more (alternating them so as to give them something 'new' to think about, each day).
One is made of a re-purposed Coat hanger containing diced vegetables while others are suspended Sprout stalks. They make short work of some of them, leading to a bit more re-designing on my part - truly keeping us all occupied!

I think it goes without saying that 2020 has been a strange year for us all, and certainly not the one we were expecting as the New Year came in just under twelve months ago!
We wish Good Health to all those who have stayed with us during the year, in previous years, and those whom we look forward to welcoming in the years to come.
Merry Christmas!

As we are not able to allow our chickens into their outside runs at the moment, due to the recent out-break of Avian Flu, we are adding some things in their covered run to keep them amused. So far they have loved, but destroyed in a few minutes, the apples hanging on bits of string and the small sheafs of straw - so today I have drilled some small holes in the bottom of a plastic bottle and hung it up for them. Inside they can see that there is some chicken feed and they soon learnt that, when they peck it, some will drop out onto the floor.
Of course, the first customer was Madame Edith, the Copper Maran who is always first into anything new – she quickly sized up the situation and was soon joined by some others who opportunistically waited to pick up whatever fell to the ground.
Hens are greedy and, as we don’t want them to get too ‘full’, we are only putting a couple of inches of grain in the bottle each day.

We usually have what we call a 'Three Field View' - all the way to Redgrave Church. Sometimes, it's misty and so only a Two Field View or even a One Field View, but today it's a No Field View!
Thank goodness on a chilly, foggy, day like today for our underfloor heating!
