One of the things we love most about staying in Dittisham is that some of Devon’s finest National Trust properties are right on our doorstep. Whether you’re blessed with sunshine or looking for something interesting to do on a rainy afternoon, these beautiful houses and gardens make wonderful days out during your stay at Higher Dart Cottage.
Greenway – Agatha Christie’s Riverside Retreat
If we had to choose a favourite, Greenway would probably be it.
Just across the River Dart from Dittisham sits Greenway, the much-loved holiday home of the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie. Christie bought the house in 1938 and described it as “the loveliest place in the world” – and it is easy to see why. The elegant Georgian house sits amongst beautiful woodland gardens that sweep down towards the river, creating one of the most magical settings in South Devon.
The house has been preserved very much as it was when Agatha and her family spent their holidays here. Walking through the rooms feels less like visiting a museum and more like stepping into somebody’s home. There are fascinating collections of books, artefacts and treasures gathered during the family’s travels, while the famous boathouse featured in her novel Dead Man’s Folly. The gardens are equally delightful, with winding paths, hidden corners and spectacular views across the Dart.
One of our favourite ways to visit is by taking the ferry from Dittisham, which lands almost at Greenway’s doorstep and makes the whole experience feel rather special. (National Trust)
Coleton Fishacre – A Step Back into the Roaring Twenties
Around twenty minutes from Dittisham is Coleton Fishacre, one of the most beautiful country houses in Devon.
Built as a holiday retreat for Rupert and Dorothy D’Oyly Carte, whose family created the famous Gilbert and Sullivan operas, the house perfectly captures the glamour and elegance of the 1920s. Art Deco interiors, stylish furnishings and period music create the feeling that the owners have just stepped out for the afternoon.
What makes Coleton Fishacre particularly special is its setting. The house sits in a sheltered coastal valley that enjoys an almost Mediterranean climate. As you wander through the gardens you’ll discover exotic plants, colourful terraces, woodland walks and unexpected glimpses of the sea. Even in the middle of winter there is often something in flower.
If the weather turns wet, the house itself offers plenty to explore, while on fine days the gardens and coastal walks are simply breathtaking. We often recommend this as a “must visit” destination for guests who enjoy both history and gardening. (National Trust)
Overbeck’s Garden – A Hidden Tropical Paradise
Perched high above Salcombe and the Kingsbridge Estuary, Overbeck’s Garden is one of Devon’s hidden gems.
The first time we visited, it felt as though we had stumbled upon a secret Mediterranean garden rather than somewhere in England. Thanks to its unique coastal microclimate, exotic plants from around the world flourish here. Palm trees, bananas, vibrant flowers and lush subtropical planting create a truly unexpected landscape.
The garden has evolved over many decades and is terraced into the cliffs overlooking the sea, meaning almost every turn reveals another spectacular view. It’s peaceful, colourful and wonderfully different from a traditional English garden.
Although the garden is the main attraction, the house contains quirky collections and fascinating stories from previous owners, adding another layer of interest to your visit. Combined with a wander around nearby Salcombe, it makes for a perfect day out. (National Trust)
Why We Love National Trust Membership
One of the great things about staying in South Devon is just how many National Trust places are within easy reach. Between Greenway, Coleton Fishacre and Overbeck’s, you have everything from literary history and Art Deco glamour to exotic gardens and stunning coastal scenery.
Each property is different, but all share the same ability to slow you down and help you appreciate the beauty, history and character of this wonderful part of Devon.
Whether you’re a keen gardener, a history enthusiast, an Agatha Christie fan or simply looking for a memorable day out, these National Trust treasures are some of our favourite recommendations for guests staying at Higher Dart Cottage.
We hope you enjoy exploring them as much as we do.
