🇺🇸 🇬🇧 On this day, 6th June 1944, 82 years ago, the D-Day landings began as Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in one of the most significant operations of the Second World War.
Among those landing on Omaha Beach were men of the 1st US Infantry Division, many of whom had been billeted here in the Winfrith area while preparing for the invasion.
The Red Lion has its own special connection to that moment in history. One young American soldier, who spent time here before D-Day, was courting one of our barmaids. He survived the fighting, returned after the war, married his sweetheart, and together they began a new life in America.
