They’re under starters orders, as one of my favourites is set to return to Dover….
Let’s have a bit of fun with this one, the Irish Ferries Triple Crown!
Cenargo’s “Racehorse” quartet, three of which, in the past, operated from Dover, in the form of the Dawn, Midnight and Northern Merchant, all named after thoroughbred horses, were always my favourites, mainly because I used to deliver stores to them. One of them, I am delighted to say, is set to return.
It’s a pretty impressive start for Irish Ferries. Just three months ago, this relative dark horse commenced operations on the short sea route from Dover to Calais with a single ship, the Isle of Inishmore. At the time, there were some who doubted the company would be on the Straits furlong… But, next month, Calais Seaways will be added to the roster, as the Isle of Innisfree and in the first few months of the New Year, a third will join the fleet, Northern Merchant, acquired from Trasmediterránea. Currently, as Ciudad De Mahon, the vessel is operating on the Valencia to Palma De Mallorca service.
A sizeable chunk of the market potentially, if they go the distance, as the company goes head-to-head with the competition, proving that they are not destined to be an also ran. Quite whether the existing operators have got the breeze-up, remains to be seen, but Irish Ferries is most certainly in the running., overcoming the hurdles on the way.
It’s odds-on then, that there will be some great photo opportunities as it has turned out and it is a sure thing that I’ll be there with the camera pointing out across the bay, irrespective of the forecast. I doubt the Irish will be yielding to the existing names, they do seem to have the bit between their teeth and haven’t been brought down so far.
Anyway, I’m heading for the finishing line with this one. I bet that some will consider this post a bit over the top, but how many horse racing terms did you manage to spot in the end ?!
I reckon I went through the card with this one. On good form today, almost a classic, in fact….!
A fine shot from the FotoFlite library, at any rate.
