SAINT PATRICK’S WAY IS OPEN FOR GUIDED TOURS

Guided walks on Saint Patrick’s Way are now on offer from Saint Patrick Centre following an easing of the lockdown restrictions.

Pilgrims will be able to walk with Saint Patrick’s guides to sites such as Inch Abbey, Saul Church, and Slieve Patrick from next week, starting in Downpatrick from the 28th and 29th and from Newcastle into the Mournes from the 1st of May.

Saint Patrick’s new coastal route from Ballyhornan to Ardglass which takes in Saint Patrick’s Well, Sheepland and the ancient ruin at Ardtole is available twice a month from 10th of May.

The Camino and Canoe Adventure on the Quoile commences on Wednesdays from the 12th of May – a guided 6km water and walking route to Inch Abbey and Saul Church.

“We have been working on these new adventures during lockdown,” said Dr Tim Campbell, director of the only permanent exhibition to Saint Patrick in the world. “We are delighted to be able to open our doors again to welcome visitors from home and abroad.”

“The walks which were piloted last year were really popular and we hope many people will come and walk Saint Patrick’s Way and learn about the true Patrick, a courageous man of faith whose impact is still being felt 1600 years later.”

“The new canoeing adventure is amazing. I have walked along the Quoile many times but it is a whole new experience seeing Down Cathedral from the water as a swan lands on the river.”

Pilgrim guide Martina Purdy said new passports have been printed for Downpatrick – as well as the new coastal route which offers some of the most spectacular coastline in Ireland. “We have so much beauty on our doorstep and this is a great way to enjoy the countryside, experience the spirit of Saint Patrick and meet new people.”

“During our first season last year, pilgrims came from as far away as Mayo, Louth and Dublin and we are finding there is a lot of interest from people closer to home too.”

“The walks are tailored for different fitness levels with a gentle 6 mile walk along the Quoile or a challenging 28km walk.”

Pilgrim guide Elaine Kelly said she is looking forward to welcoming everyone to Saint Patrick’s Way. “We have a fantastic array of pilgrim experiences that will delight and inspire you,” said Ms Kelly who will be leading the canoeing along with John Hubbocks from Mobile Team Adventure.

The Saint Patrick’s Centre Shop has introduced a series of new ranges, particularly homeware, and the new look Ryan’s Garden Café are opening on Friday April 30th.
