Some places look like they have a story to tell. Others look like they might be keeping a secret or two. 🕯️

It's autumn, so we're feeling particularly into imposing towers, Gothic architecture, winding staircases, centuries-old halls and lonely lighthouses on the edge of the world.

We've gathered eight of our most atmospheric places to stay across England and Wales, each with just the right amount of mystery, drama and old-world charm.

Are they haunted? We couldn't possibly say. But we wouldn't mind finding out, particularly with a roaring fire, a good book and a rather generous glass of red.

Perched high above the rolling Shropshire countryside, Little Barn is a beautifully secluded retreat for two, set within its own private two-acre sanctuary.

Inside, contemporary design meets proper countryside comfort, with vaulted ceilings, picture windows, a wood-burning stove and far-reaching views across wooded valleys and patchwork hills.

Outside, there’s a spacious terrace for slow mornings and sunset drinks, plus a tucked-away barrel sauna for an extra bit of indulgence after a day exploring the Shropshire Hills.

A proper Cornish farmhouse surrounded by nothing but nature (and a fair few pheasants).

Set on the private Bonython Estate on the Lizard Peninsula, this beautifully renovated farmhouse sleeps ten across five en-suite bedrooms and has been finished to a five-star standard throughout.

The house is stylish, spacious and wonderfully private, but the setting is what really gives it something extra. Guests can explore around 20 acres of the Bonython Estate Gardens, including a restored walled garden, potager and a hidden valley with three small lakes.

Beyond the estate, both the Helford River and Poldhu Cove are just over a mile away, with some of Cornwall’s most beautiful coastline close by. Think Kynance Cove, Kennack Sands, coastal walks and fishing villages such as Coverack, Cadgwith and Mullion.
