Another wildlife highlight to look out for during your stay at West Coast Hideaways. Otters live all along the coastline here and, if you're lucky, can even be seen in the local Loch Nedd. We found this one hunting in the seaweed just behind the local petrol pumps at Lochinver this week!

Explore the local burns (Scottish word for streams) and you might see this bird; - the dipper. It actually walks and swims under water in search of insects. It usually first catches your eye as it sits on a rock mid-stream with it's white chest standing out. Its a sure sign of excellent water quality full of life!

Our local mountain, Quinag (meaning milk-pail in Gaelic), is made of billion year old Torridonian red sandstone rock. When the red evening sun hits it the whole thing glows red and it looks unreal! We’re in the UNESCO Northwest Highlands Geopark and this is just one of the highlights.

Today started snowy but spring is edging forwards. The flowers of goat willow are out now and they're one of the earliest sources of nectar and pollen for insects. Down on our local sea-loch, Loch Nedd, a pair of greenshanks has arrived and are getting ready for the breeding season - if you are lucky you will hear or see them at this time of year before they move up into the hills where they nest.
