DID YOU KNOW? The United States uses "proof" alongside ABV primarily as a legacy of 16th-century English tax laws, where officials tested spirit strength by pouring it on gunpowder. If the mixture burned with a steady blue flame, it was "proof" it wasn't watered down.

In 1848, the U.S. government established a simpler, standardized definition for distilled spirits: proof is exactly twice the percentage of Alcohol By Volume (ABV). For example, 40% ABV is 80 proof, and 100 proof equals 50% ABV.

Today, while U.S. law strictly mandates the display of ABV on all beverage labels, distillers retain the "proof" measurement as an industry-standard tradition, especially for higher-strength whiskeys, bourbons, and rums.

This is for our English friends in Kidderminster and other regions where it will become extremely hot the coming week. A perfect reason to come visit Speyside where temperatures are much lower and a visit to a distillery warehouse may cool you down even further. We still got two rooms left for you! ;-)

We had a little break of 4 days from our busy season and visited Angus. On our way we visited Dunnottar Castle, Glencadam Distillery, Arbroath Abbey, Lunan Bay, Arbroath Red Cliffs and Lindores Abbey Distillery. All from one location, Lunan Bay Bed and Breakfast Balnabrechan Lodge, a perfect location to do the trips. Balnabrechan is a beautiful wooden lodge, quiet and surrounded by coast and history with an amazing host Jules. The Abbey has a lot of information about the famous Declaration of Arbroath and is a beautiful site. And when in Arbroath we had to taste the smokies of course. On our way back we visited the Fettercairn Distillery with its very unique stills and great whisky. We will of course share our findings with our guests.
