Old wooden doors. Stone walls. Wisteria that’s been climbing the house for years.
It’s the little details that give Northmoor its character.

They’re the sort of things you might not notice straight away, but the ones you remember long after you’ve gone home.

We think that’s part of its charm.

There are plenty of places to disappear for half an hour at Northmoor.

A comfortable chair, a cup of tea, a good book, or simply somewhere quiet to sit while the rest of the house carries on around you...

Big enough for everyone to be together, with plenty of space to disappear for half an hour when you fancy it.

A proper country house kitchen.

Practical, welcoming and well equipped for large groups, with everything you need to cook, eat and spend time together.

The Aga is always earning its keep, there’s a large table for everyone to gather around, and cupboards full of plates, serving dishes, pots, pans and plenty of mugs for endless cups of tea.

When everyone’s staying under one roof, this is naturally where people gather. Whether it’s the first cup of tea of the day or getting dinner on the table for a crowd, the kitchen is always busy.

Wherever you are in the house, you’re never far from a view into the garden.

Every window looks out onto trees, lawns or another corner of the grounds.

A bay window or even a bathroom sink can all become places to pause for a moment and look outside.

Some rooms don’t need much explaining.

Comfortable sofas, views over the gardens and plenty of space to spread out.

Whether it’s morning coffee, an afternoon with a book or an evening glass of wine, this is one of the rooms where people naturally gather.

Hidden around the house are reminders of the people who lived here before.

One of our favourites is a handwritten note from the war listing what had been supplied by the government and what belonged to the house. Child and adult evacuees were brought to Exmoor from all over England and Northmoor was one of the places used for them to stay.

Small details like these are what makes Northmoor feel a little different from your average holiday accommodation.

Did you know Northmoor helped inspire a series of novels?

The house and its surroundings helped inspire author Jenny Kane and her Mill Grange series, set on Exmoor and filled with many of the things people love most about this part of the world.

Beautiful countryside, memorable characters and a slower pace of life all feature heavily in the books.

We’re delighted Northmoor played a small part in that story.

Old stone walls, uneven gates, worn steps through the gardens and wooden doors that have lasted a lifetime.

Northmoor isn’t polished or overly designed. A lot of what people like about it is simply that it feels lived in and full of character.

Guests tell us they're always finding another path, doorway or corner of the garden they hadn’t noticed before.

Late afternoon light in one of the sitting rooms at Northmoor.

We love it when guests come and play the piano at the house, although it is old and not concert standard we keep it regularly tuned. We find there is nearly always someone in the group who will sit down and have a go!

Bedrooms at Northmoor aren’t all styled the same way and that’s part of the charm.

Some are grand and spacious, some are simpler and more cosy, but all feel like they belong to a house rather than a hotel.

Old rugs, solid wood furniture, views out over the grounds, they are the sort of rooms people tend to settle into quickly.
