Lots of trees in the woodland have unique features. Cherry with striking show of spring flowers, Lime (Linden) with its intoxicating summer scent, fruit bearing trees like hazel and heritage oak, but black poplar are trees that SOUND nice. The dense waxy leaves on thin stalks gently clap together in their thousands in light breeze and make the smoothest forest rustling sound.
Most black poplar on the edge of parkland were planted as ornamental trees, they’re actually a hybrid of native black poplar and Italian poplar for tall dense vigorous growth, while our native black poplar is now one of the rarest trees in the country.
When a light breeze sweeps through the trees, look up at the shimmering leaves and listen to the gentle white noise of the rustling branches.
