May blossom is still in full bloom on hawthorn bushes. Shakespeare was probably referring to these blooms among the flowers when he wrote Sonnet 18;

“Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.”

That was written in the 1590s but we can still stroll along country paths on an early summer day and catch the scent that inspired Shakespeares poetry.

Yellowhammer; Male birds have canary yellow plumage, flocking at this time of year you can hear their ‘little bit of bread and no cheese’ call.

Chaffinch; Male birds have striking blue hoods and bold enough to come and take seed from tables.

Magpie; striking, agile and intelligent, immaculate black and white and with subtly iridescent tones of green and blue. Representative of arguably the world’s greatest football team.
