Throughout the 1930s and during WW2, Freemasons were a target for the N**i regime.
They were arrested, thrown into concentration camps and murdered.
Some were persecuted just for being Masons while others who were seized were incidentally Masons.
Estimates for the number of Masons killed between 1933 and 1945 start at 80,000.
In the camp system, they were classed as 'Political Prisoners'. Thereby they were identified by a red triangle on their camp uniforms.
Below is an example of a surviving jacket with the red triangle clearly visible.
It was this mass-murder of members which influenced the organisation in retreating from the public eye after the war.

On this date, May 3, 1886, famed author Rudyard Kipling received the Fellowcraft Degree. He was initiated at the age of 20 in the Lodge of Hope and Perseverance No. 782 in Lahore, India.

He was immediately appointed the Lodge's Secretary because, as a young journalist, he possessed a typewriter!

The experience obviously left an indelible impact on the young man, as Masonic themes permeated his work for the rest of his life.
