Seen in the porch of our local church, St Margaret of Antioch, a very specific warning to all concerning who they may not marry. No room for doubt here!

We are opening again now and welcomed our first guest this weekend. A few changes are inevitable and we hope they will make our guests feel comfortable and safe.
We are taking only one booking at a time, which means that you and those in your group be it you are a couple or a group of friends, will be the ONLY guests. The house is spacious and this should make social distancing easy.
We are leaving 72 hours between bookings. Your room is made up 3 days ahead (the longest time the covid virus can survive)to ensure maximum hygiene. Hand sanitisers are provided.
The breakfast room will ONLY be used by you. A generous continental style breakfast is included in the price and there is a microwave and fridge so you can self cater if you wish. We are not doing the cook to order English breakfast for the time being as our kitchen is used by the family and its not suitable for constantly sanitising to covid-19 standards etc. We recommend Carlos Tearooms, just a hop away.. does a great cooked breakfast for a great price.
You can book us on Expedia or AirBNB but we would urge you to phone or email us direct..to ensure the best price and to discuss what your needs are. We don't wear masks in our home but are happy for guests to do whatever they feel comfortable with. We will ask you whether you want us to service your rooms daily or prefer that we don't enter the room during your stay..the choice is yours. If you explain your situation we will do our best to make sure you are looked after.

CHINESE MEDICINE DOLLS, seen at Basildon Park. Well-born Chinese ladies or gents used to use these dolls to indicate to their physicians exactly where it hurt, thereby avoiding the indignity of a personal examination. It's not so far removed from the way things are heading today, with telephone and even email consultations. Don't you sigh a bit when you've asked your doctor a question and they tell to read up online about it? Then you go online and end up more worried by all the contradictory and alarmist "information" you encounter?

If you are interested in the preservation of rare species, take a look at Project Lugger. The Lugger Falcon is in imminent danger of dying out and one of our recent guests was Jean-Michel Defoirdt, whose company RAPAX is actively involved with trying to breed Lugger Falcons . Human interference with their habitat combined with natural dangers mean that their reproduction is currently poor. Breeders find that the eggs are so sensitive that they don't hatch in incubators, only if sat on by the parent bird. They need the random cooling and temperature fluctuation caused by the sitting bird getting up periodically. Theoretically possible to persuade a chicken to adopt the egg but RAPAX are developing specialised incubators to try and replicate the habits of the mother falcon. Still early days but we wish Jean-Michel luck in his endeavours to raise these fascinating Falcons.

The beautiful interior of a Showmans caravan, on display at the Netley Steam Fair. How do they get all that into quite narrow caravans? What happens when they move the van..do they have to put everything away so it doesn't break? It reminds me of traditional interiors of Canal boats..cosy and full of homely touches.

Lawnmowers operated by bicycle power! We saw these nifty inventions at a Biker convention...that is motorcycle not pushbike. It was an interesting crowd, black leathers and tattoos, crutches a popular accessory and age group mostly over 40s if not 50s. Not so many young bikers nowadays, is it a trend or have motorbikes become too expensive for younger people? It was held outside a warehouse of retro and antique paraphenalia, The Wilton Emporium. It was a fascinating treasure house, about half an hour away from here.

A sad example of fly-tipping observed on an otherwise lovely circular country walk from our house. Two things spring to mind, the unsightly rubbish dumped in the middle of a public footpath, and also the ponies wandering through the mess. They are not wild ponies, their owners have let them graze among the rubbish and are using the public footpath as free grazing. Walkers with dogs may not want to take them through because of spooking either the dogs or the ponies, and likewise some walkers may not be comfortable with loose horses. The landowners are under legal obligation to keep these ancient byways through their land clear for walkers but it doesn't seem to be happening here. This is a popular local route and I am trying to get Wellow council to act on this issue.

Rotherfield Park was open for is one day per year, notable among other things for its well preserved ice house. You can see by the photos how its built into the hill and how small the opening is. You creep along a short passage to the huge underground vault, brick-lined and, when in use, a second lining of huge blocks of ice. A ladder would be the only means of access to the food you might have stored there. What a cold and creepy job, if you were tasked with bringing some ice-cream or suchlike up to the main house. Not only that it is at least 100 metres down hill from the house in a little valley with no lighting. In Summer the food would be warm by the time you got it up to the house. But of course it was a great luxury to have an Ice House before refrigeration.
The mansion house was used as "Manderley" in the film of "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier... and the 12 acre gardens just go on and on. Its only open to the public once a year.

I decided to make a bird house..bought chicken wire for the frame, a bale of straw to insulate it, camouflaged it with ferns and made an enormous mess. I spent several days on it and had enough chicken wire and straw left for dozens more if it hadn't been for my sore fingers and the straw-infested carpet
Unfortunately I popped into the new "In-Excess" near us and saw this beautiful bamboo-fibre bird house- for £1.00..

The Art House in Romsey held another fabulous event during Hampshires Open Studio week. Christine Watkins modest terraced house was bursting to the seams with the works of 29 artists and in fact is a living work of art most of the year. The topiary tea pot which is about 8 foot high was in the garden of another studio I visited and was far more memorable than what was inside....
