Today, the flag above the Town Hall will fly at half-mast to commemorate the life of Betty Gallacher on the day of her funeral.

Betty dedicated her life to championing workers’ rights, LGBTQ+ equality and community support. She worked tirelessly to break down barriers and build a more inclusive Eastbourne. As a founding member of Eastbourne Pride, first held in 2017, she helped create an event that has gone from strength to strength and continues to bring people together.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with her family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time.

Today, our flag is flying at half mast in recognition of Betty Gallagher who sadly passed yesterday morning at home where she would have wanted to be.

Betty was a pioneer, campaigner, trade unionist and friend whose life’s work helped transform Eastbourne into a more welcoming and inclusive place for LGBT people.

Born in Scotland, Betty displayed courage from an early age. She joined the Army at just seventeen years old, only to suffer the injustice of being discharged because of her sexuality.

Rather than allowing that experience to define her, she devoted the decades that followed to challenging discrimination and standing up for others.

For more than forty years, Betty served as a trade union representative, earning a reputation as a determined advocate for fairness, dignity and equality.

Her commitment to social justice never wavered, and she became a tireless champion of LGBT rights at a time when many still faced prejudice and exclusion.

Her greatest public achievement came when she founded Eastbourne Pride, turning a vision of visibility, celebration and solidarity into one of the town’s most cherished annual events.

Betty believed that Pride was about education, remembrance, equality and ensuring that future generations understood the struggles and sacrifices that had secured their rights.

Today, her legacy can be seen in every person she encouraged, every barrier she helped break down and every life she touched. Her courage changed lives and her kindness inspired others.
