The Bonham

The Bonham The Bonham is the most stylish boutique hotel in Edinburgh. With 49 individually designed bedrooms, N It has a fascinating history.
(1286)

The Bonham occupies a series of Victorian buildings in the West End of Edinburgh. The houses were originally occupied by well to do families and their servants, enjoying the privacy of Drumsheugh Gardens and the ease of access to everything Edinburgh had to offer. In 1939 the houses were sold and became collectively known as the “Private Clinic”, a private medical practice specialising in maternit

y care. Over the next 12 years many hundreds of babies were born on the premises, now fondly known as “Bonham Babies” when they come to visit.

1951 saw the sale of the Private Clinic to the University of Edinburgh who converted the buildings into Muir Hall of Residence for university students from outside the city. Following the sale of Muir Hall the Bonham Hotel opened in 1998 as one of the first boutique hotels in the city. After an extensive renovation in 2018 the hotel now offers guests one of the best places to stay in Edinburgh and is still true to the original aspiration of providing a homely and friendly base whilst visiting Edinburgh. Within a 10 minute walk of The Bonham Hotel you will reach the bustling shopping area of Princess Street, with many big name high street stores along with great views of Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street Gardens or turn on to upmarket George Street which is full of luxury restaurants, cocktail bars and designer shops.

With the busy summer season almost behind us, we thought it was about time to bring back our 35 from No.35 series, where we highlight some of Edinburgh’s best places to visit, all within a 35 minute walk of The Bonham.

And today’s destination is a very special one: the newly reopened King’s Theatre on Leven Street. 🎭 The Grade A listed theatre first opened in 1906 and closed for its major redevelopment in 2023, reopening last month after more than three years of work.

The programme is already looking fantastic! If you’re planning a visit around Christmas, you’ll also want to keep an eye out for Edinburgh’s much loved festive tradition, with the famous King’s Theatre pantomime returning home this season.

Hotel bathrooms don’t always get much attention on social media. We think this one deserves some. 🛁

Each of our rooms and suites at The Bonham is individually designed, bathrooms included.

This one belongs to one of our Superior Suites, and we thought it was far too beautiful to keep in the background.

Ohh... we recognise this room! 😍

where do you actually buy something made in Scotland in Edinburgh?

I get asked this all the time…

Most of what looks Scottish in the city isn’t… The genuinely Scottish stuff is often tucked away… small workshops, family-run studios, heritage brands still producing here after generations.
I’ve put together a free guide.
Comment SHOPPING below and I’ll send it to your DMs.

Don’t forget to check your message requests if you don’t see my reply.

Just a short walk from The Bonham Hotel, you’ll find one of Edinburgh’s most distinctive neighbourhoods.
Dean Village dates back to the 12th century and was once a working milling village, with mills along the Water of Leith supplying the city for hundreds of years.
Today, the mills are long gone, but much of the old architecture remains, making it a fascinating little detour when you’re exploring Edinburgh.
And it’s right on our doorstep.

Looking after our guests goes beyond their stay with us. That’s why we’ve built a long standing relationship with local black cab company, City Cabs Edinburgh Ltd , who we can always rely on to get our guests where they need to be safely and on time.

If you’d like to pre book your ride to or from the airport, or a journey during your visit, just let our reception team know and they’ll be happy to arrange it for you.

And really, is there anything more iconic than seeing Edinburgh from the back of a black cab? 🚕🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We've has some wonderful guest stories as a result of our recent history posts, so here’s another ... this time the story behind The Bonham’s Library.

The name is a little nod to the building’s past, back when The Bonham was Muir Hall and the three townhouses provided accommodation for medical students.

The Library now is a perfect quiet breakout room for guests, or a relaxed spot for drinks. It can also be included when you book the Dean Suite for a private event.

Reserve it here: https://thebonham.pulse.ly/uwvwvqv24s

☕ We love seeing visitors take a moment to unwind here, especially with a coffee and shortbread in hand.

You loved our earlier post about Drumsheugh Gardens this week (thank you for all the DMs we received with photos, we’re still looking through them all!)

And so we thought we’d share more! Situated directly opposite The Bonham Hotel, it forms part of Edinburgh’s beautiful Victorian extension of the New Town, developed from the 1830s onwards.

The area was once surrounded by five acres of parkland and remains one of the city’s most picturesque and elegant corners to this day. 🌿

One of our porters’ favourite behind-the-scenes jobs? Helping with the surprises. 🥂

When guests are staying with us for a wedding, our team love helping to add those little personal touches to the room before they arrive.

This recent wedding welcome included a few photographs, a handwritten note, macarons, chocolate-covered strawberries and, of course, something chilled and ready to open.
