Does our staircase look familiar?

Those with a sharp eye (or a good knowledge of Edinburgh's history) might spot that it looks awfully similar to a particular set of stairs near a famous city hotel.

The Scotsman Steps were built between 1899 and 1902 as part of the construction of the building housing The Scotsman newspaper (now The Scotsman Hotel.)

Mr John Ritchie Findlay, owner and editor of The Scotsman, built his family home (now our hotel) in 1876, and the love of marble steps appears to have been carried through from his home life to his work life.

Many of you are familiar with the beautiful details at the entrance to our building, but have you ever seen it from the back?

Our bedrooms at this side of the hotel overlook historic Dean Village, once a busy nineteenth century area that brought in blacksmiths, textile workers, and millers.

Then and Now ...

The ceiling in our Rothesay Room is something to be marvelled. Guests are always wowed by it's detail, painted with a fresco featuring the signs of the zodiac, while the stained glass in the windows features the initials of the original 1870's owners, Sir John and Susan Findlay.

We’re delighted to be featured in The Times as one of the best affordable hotels in Edinburgh under £200.

🥃 Named 'Best for whisky fans', they highlighted our peaceful Georgian setting, tucked just away from the city centre, along with the small touches our guests love, from the wood panelled library and fireside cream teas to a residents’ bar well stocked with whisky.

If you’re staying with us, you’re just a short stroll from our sister hotel, The Bonham.

Set within (another!) beautiful townhouse on Drumsheugh Gardens, it’s well worth a visit, whether you’re planning dinner or just popping in for a drink. Expect relaxed dining, seasonal Scottish produce, and modern European dishes in a characterful setting. Dinner is served Thursday to Saturday, and their popular Boozy Snoozy lunch, three courses with wine, is available Friday to Sunday.

The stylish bar and lounge are open daily too, perfect for coffee, cocktails, light bites or a traditional afternoon tea. An easy option, whatever your plans for the day.

📢 We’re delighted to share an exciting new chapter for BB Edinburgh.
In early 2026, the owners of The Bonham Hotel, just a few doors along at Drumsheugh Gardens, were delighted to acquire the property, bringing BB Edinburgh into The Bonham family.

Looking ahead, a thoughtful and sympathetic renovation is planned for late 2026 and early 2027. The vision is to create a luxury boutique townhouse that carefully preserves the building’s Late Victorian character, while celebrating the legacy of the Findlay families, whose influence can still be felt throughout the property and across the City of Edinburgh.

We look forward to sharing more as plans unfold.
