Stories from The Townhouse | Mary, Queen of Scots
A little piece of Scotland’s story, right here in Leith.
Mary, Queen of Scots returned to Scotland in 1561, arriving at Leith after her years in France. Centuries later, the area remains rich in stories, character and a history that makes it unlike anywhere else in Edinburgh.
At The Townhouse, we love the details that give a place its sense of identity — a building with a story to tell, in a neighbourhood with plenty of its own.

The season for slowing down.
Crisp mornings on Leith Links, warm Georgian interiors and the comfort of your own suite to come home to.
Autumn might just be our favourite time at The Townhouse.

Stories from the Townhouse | Mary, Queen of Scots
A familiar face watching over one of our suites.
Mary, Queen of Scots has a particular connection to Leith. On 19 August 1561, aged just 18, she arrived by ship at Leith after thirteen years in France, returning to Scotland to begin her personal reign.
More than 450 years later, her portrait has found a home here at The Townhouse — just a short distance from the shores where her return to Scotland began.

Stories from the Townhouse | Light from Above
Look up as you reach the top of The Townhouse and you’ll find one of its most striking original features — our oval stairwell rooflight.
In Georgian townhouses, rooflights like this served an important purpose, bringing natural daylight into the central staircase where traditional windows couldn’t. But they were also designed to impress, turning the stairwell into an architectural feature in its own right.
Built in 1818, ours continues to flood the heart of the house with light more than 200 years later, framed by its beautiful ornate detailing.
A practical Georgian solution, made beautiful.

Why no two suites at The Townhouse look the same.
When we restored The Townhouse, we never wanted to repeat the same design from room to room. Each suite has its own character, shaped by its proportions, original features and the pieces we chose for it.
Antique artwork sits alongside bespoke upholstery, traditional fabrics and carefully sourced furniture — creating rooms that feel collected over time rather than simply decorated.
The result is eight individual suites, each with its own personality, but all unmistakably part of The Townhouse.

STORIES FROM THE TOWNHOUSE | The Staircase
If these stairs could talk…
The story of The Townhouse begins over two centuries ago, when the house at 6 Links Gardens was built for Robert McNair in 1818.
More than 200 years later, so much of the character that makes this old townhouse special can still be found within its walls — and we certainly couldn’t disguise a feature as beautiful as this.
During our restoration, many of the staircase’s missing cast-iron balusters were carefully reinstated, while the original timber handrail was refurbished, bringing the staircase back to life while preserving the character it has acquired over more than two centuries.
Thousands of footsteps must have made their way up these stairs since 1818 — residents, visitors and, eventually, hotel guests. Today, they carry our guests to their suites, just as they have carried generations through the house before them.
We like to think we’re simply the latest custodians of a house with many more stories still to tell.

Snug bedrooms for little and big kids alike.
Tucked away within each of our family suites, our cosy snug bedrooms are the perfect hideaway for adventures, downtime and sweet dreams.

With full-size single beds, our snugs have been thoughtfully designed with every age in mind.

We wanted staying as a family to feel every bit as special as a grown-up escape — thoughtful design, beautiful details and a space for everyone to call their own.
