Overlooking one of Edinburgh’s prettiest private garden squares, The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square — formerly The Roxburghe Hotel — consists of seven inter-connecting Georgian townhouses in the heart of the New Town, a UNESCO world heritage site. As the newest Principal hotel, it has undergone a multi-million restoration and refurbishment: all of our bedrooms and suites have been given a smart, new look, inspired by the golden age of travel and a genuine sense of Scottish hospitality. Guests familiar with PRINCIPAL will find familiar touch points, including the red bedside telephone, tuck box of treats and a vintage post box. Our beautiful internal courtyard, The Garden — an oasis of calm with a glass roof — is now open from breakfast through to the wee hours. Meet Nkem. And Okolo. One artist. Two personalities 👀

Last night, we were delighted to welcome Scottish-Nigerian artist and printmaker Nkem Okwechime (Nkem Okwechime ) as our new Artist in Residence, alongside his rather intriguing alter ego (and Kimpton’s new resident spirit), Okolo.

Exploring identity, belonging and cultural inheritance, Okolo: The Guest in Residence brings together printmaking, ceramics and mixed media, drawing on Nkem’s Scottish-Nigerian heritage and the intersection of European and West African cultural influences.

Building on his research into the African collection at - Nkem’s work explores the stories, traditions and personal histories that shape who we are. Through contemporary art, he invites us to consider what we inherit, how our identities evolve and what it really means to belong.

And as for Okolo? Well, judging by last night’s antics, he’s already making himself quite at home… 👀

We’re thrilled to have them both in residence until the end of November. Come and get acquainted 💙
