📍Dundas Street

Have you discovered just how interesting our very own Dundas Street in New Town is? A lovely wide avenue lined with Georgian buildings, antique stores, cafes, art galleries and more.

Planned in 1802 as part of the first extension of Edinburgh’s New Town and designed by architects Robert Reid and William Sibbald, it stretches from Princes St down to Canonmills. From the higher end you can enjoy views towards the Kingdom of Fife across the Firth of Forth. Crossed by famous historical streets such as Cumberland Street, Great King Street and Northumberland Street it’s in the very heart of Georgian New Town.

Researching for this wee blurb it was fascinating to find it had trams running up and down its relatively steep slope. And did you know that the lower end used to be called Pitt Street? If you look up you can still see the faded ghost signs painted Pitt Street on the buildings’ stone at various points (frame 10).

Dundas Street also played a key part in Dickins family life. In 1987 Louise’s family moved from Yorkshire to 27 Dundas Street.

❤️ If you have any stories of your own from Dundas Street, let us know in the comments! We’d love to hear your memories of it.

Louise's Sunday Share - Edinburgh nights. The view of the city from Waterloo Place is always stunning especially as the light of the day fades. 20 Calton Hill. Currently featuring on BBC2's A House Through Time. It's a fascinating watch. And the streets of the Old Town deserted at 12.30am when I walked home v early on Monday morning after the most amazing concert with Oscar Dudamel and his orchestra in The Hub. One of those life affirming concerts, that's brimming with joy. We are so incredibly lucky to have all this incredible talent on our doorstep in August.

Louise's Saturday Share - Edinburgh is so exciting in August! Wandering to take in all the action on the streets, soaking up the buzz. Electric Yuja Wang with JLCO concert. Seeing such skill on display is a privilege to witness. There's nothing like live music. More amazing moments in the Usher Hall hearing Ortiz for the first time on Friday night with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic. Wow!! Then the feel good frenzy which is House of Life at Underbelly. Joyful. The table by the window at Whirlybird is the one to book. Seek out the quiet havens metres from the Royal Mile. So much to love about Edinburgh in August. 🤩❤️🤩
