A House with Two Fronts 🏰
This remarkable house tells its history from two different directions.
In the 16th century, the River Forth was an essential route for travel, trade and supplies. The house originally faced towards the river, where boats could bring goods and provisions along the water. From there, supplies could be unloaded and transported onwards by horse and carriage, making the river-facing side the natural and practical entrance to the house.
As the centuries passed, however, the way people travelled changed. Roads became increasingly important, and access by carriage and, later, other forms of transport shifted towards the landward side.
Over time, the house’s relationship with its surroundings changed too. What had once been the practical approach from the river gradually gave way to a new principal approach from the road.
Today, the building can be said to have two fronts—each reflecting a different chapter in its long history.
One looks back towards a time when the River Forth was the main highway, bringing life and supplies to its doorstep. The other faces the road, representing the changing world and the evolution of travel and access over the centuries.
