⚠️ Rabies & Avian Flu – Keep Yourself and Our Wildlife Safe

We’re seeing a marked rise in the number of people in Orkney needing rabies vaccination after returning home from abroad.

Rabies is almost always fatal — but is usually preventable. So, if you’re travelling outside the UK:
🛫 Check if you need pre travel rabies vaccination
🚫 Avoid contact with wild or stray animals
⚕️ Seek urgent medical advice if you’re scratched or bitten while abroad, particularly if the skin is broken

We’re also asking the public to take care around local wildlife. Scotland, and Orkney, continues to see avian influenza (bird flu) in wild birds.
If you find a sick or injured bird (or other wild animal):
❌ Don’t touch it
❌ Don’t try to rescue it
📞 Report it via official channels instead
Please follow Scottish Government and APHA guidance, which is to NOT PICK UP OR TOUCH dead, sick, or injured wild birds. Please see the photo below for how to report.
