Pitmuies is worth an hour of anyone's day, and September is your last chance this year.

Two walled gardens beside an eighteenth-century house, fifteen minutes or so east of us. Long herbaceous borders, an old kitchen garden, and walks down along the river and the loch under some genuinely fine trees. There's a turreted doocot and a Gothick wash house, which sound like things I've made up but aren't.

The shrubs are turning by now, so you get the autumn colour and hardly anyone else in the place. It opens for Scotland's Gardens Scheme until the 30th, then that's it until spring.

Small charge on the gate and it goes to charity. Details on scotlandsgardens.org.

Well ridden, all of you.

Ride the North came back to Angus on Saturday the 29th, starting and finishing at Glamis Castle, and if you were anywhere near a B road that morning you'll have seen them going past in their hundreds.

It isn't a race. It's a challenge ride, 150km or 110km, and the shorter one isn't the soft option: about 1,250 metres of climbing against 1,850 on the long route. Anti-clockwise round the county through Inverarity, Monikie, Letham, Brechin, Edzell, Menmuir, Memus, Kirriemuir and Lintrathen, then home to Glamis. Places were capped at 2,300.

Thirteen years, millions raised for charity, and after years of moving around the north east it has settled here. The welcome won it.

If you rode it, tell us how you got on. We'd love to know.

Free doors, one weekend only.

Doors Open Days reaches Angus on 12 and 13 September. It's the weekend when buildings that are normally locked, or that you've driven past a hundred times without ever going in, open up for nothing.

The Pictish Room at Aberlemno is on the programme, about six miles up the road from our gate, open from noon on the Sunday. Carved stones that have been standing there since long before anyone thought to write any of it down.

I'll be honest, this is one of my favourite weekends of the Angus year.

Something a bit different for September.

The Montrose LandxSea Film Fest runs from 11 to 13 September at the Montrose Playhouse, about half an hour from us. It's Scotland's environmental film festival, and this year there are twenty-two films including Scottish and UK premieres, with the filmmakers there in person for the questions afterwards.

Here's the thing about it. It's deliberately small. Three days of films about land, sea and the people living through the changes, and then everyone standing about in the foyer afterwards gently arguing about what they've just watched.

Programme and tickets at landxsea.org.

Fancy a proper day out this summer? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The Dunkeld and Birnam Highland Games are back on Saturday 29 August 2026, over at the Games Park in Little Dunkeld, Perthshire.

It's been running since 1864, so you know it's the real thing. Piping, dancing and the heavy events, all in one lovely spot.

We're only about 30 miles away, so it's an easy run over. Spend the day cheering on the tossers and the pipers, then come home to the quiet here at the park.

Festival by day, peace and quiet back here at night. That's the Foresterseat way.

🌟 Superhost status on Airbnb — again!

We're so proud that Foresterseat has been recognised as an Airbnb Superhost once more. Earning it the first time was special; keeping it is down to the same people showing up and getting it right, stay after stay.

A huge thank you to Linda and our brilliant cleaning team, who make sure every shepherd hut is spotless and welcoming. And to Ana, who keeps our linen and towels beautifully fresh and never blinks at a last-minute booking — you're a gem.

Most of all, thank you to every guest who's stayed with us and taken a moment to share their experience. Superhost is awarded on your reviews, so this one belongs to you as much as us.

Here's to many more memorable stays in our wee corner of Angus! 💚

Some evenings you just don't fancy cooking, or driving anywhere. That's exactly why I love having Sinclair's Kitchen right here on site.

Eat well, then wander back to your own quiet corner of the park. No car keys, no washing up, no fuss. 🍽️

It's best to book a table ahead, so they can save you a spot. 01307 818080.

Good food, then peace and quiet. That's the Foresterseat way.

If you've never been, it's a proper traditional Highland games, with the heavy events, the piping and the Highland dancing. Held at Monaltrie Park in Ballater, right in the heart of Royal Deeside.

We're about 45 miles away, so an easy run over for the day.

Spend the day cheering on the strongmen and the pipers, then come home to the quiet here. That's the Foresterseat way. 😊

Scotland can't make up its mind about the weather? Good. I've got just the plan. 🌧️

Down on the Dundee waterfront, two of the best days out sit right next to each other, and both keep you dry. The free-entry V&A Dundee, and Captain Scott's RRS Discovery a few steps away.

Design one minute, the age of Antarctic exploration the next, a roof over your head the whole time.

Culture by day, quiet back here by night. Full guide below. 😊
