Look what turned up over Foresterseat. One of our guests caught the northern lights from the park and kindly sent this in. We don’t see them often here in Angus, so it’s a real treat when the sky puts on a show like this. Worth stepping out in your slippers for. Thank you for sharing it with us.

October, briefly.

The geese hit their peak around the middle of the month at Montrose Basin, tens of thousands of them, and dawn on the mudflats is one of the genuinely great things about living here.

Both exhibitions at the Meffan in Forfar close on the 11th, so that's your last fortnight for those.

And the glens turn. They always turn later than you expect and then do the whole thing in about ten days, so keep an eye out and be ready to drop everything.

There's still room this autumn, if you fancy it.

We've pitches and huts free through October, and honestly it's the part of the year we'd pick ourselves. Cold enough for a proper jumper, dark enough for stars, quiet enough to hear the geese going over.

Here's what actually changes here in September.

The midges give up, which is the headline. The light goes gold by about seven. You start hearing the owls in the oak properly, because everything else has gone quiet. And there's suddenly space, because the school holidays are over and the touring field has thinned right out.

It's the same park it was in July. You just get considerably more of it to yourself.

Bookings for 2027 are open.

So many of you have been asking, so here it is: you can now book your 2027 stay at Foresterseat.

The other one at the Meffan, while you're there.

Playing with Fire is a woodfired pottery show, on in Forfar until 11 October. Worth a look even if pottery isn't your thing, and I say that mostly because of how the stuff is made.

Woodfiring is the old, slow, unpredictable way of doing it. You load a kiln, you burn wood in it for a day or more, and the ash and the flame decide half of what the finished piece looks like. Two pots made from the same clay on the same day can come out completely different.

Two shows, one small museum, both closing on the 11th.

The Jacobite story, told from this bit of Scotland.

Tartan and Turmoil is on at Montrose Museum until 23 November. Angus was not a bystander in any of it, and this is the county's own part of the story rather than the version that gets told from Edinburgh.

Montrose is a good half day anyway. Museum, then the High Street, then down to the beach.

Forty-five years of walking the northern glens, and here's what came back.

Everything Flows is at the Meffan in Forfar until 11 October. Bill Duncan has been going up into the northern glens with a camera and a notebook since the early eighties, and this is Glen Esk's waterfalls, pools and rivers, set against Heraclitus and the old line about never stepping into the same river twice.

If it leaves you wanting the real thing, the Loch Lee circular runs from Invermark at the top of the glen, almost sixteen kilometres up past the falls of Unich and Damff. Boots, not trainers.

It's a small show in a small museum ten minutes from us, and it's on my list before it closes.

Listen out over the next few weeks.

The pink-footed geese are coming back. They cross from Iceland and Greenland every autumn and the first skeins usually turn up over Angus about now, a ragged V somewhere overhead and that noise they make, which you hear long before you find them in the sky.

Numbers build all through the month and peak in mid-October, when Montrose Basin holds tens of thousands of them. Dawn and dusk are when to be there.

But you don't have to go anywhere. Stand outside on a still evening and look up. They come right over us.
