Why are rowan trees so special in Scotland?

The brilliant red berries appearing on the rowan trees are one of my favourite early signs of autumn here in Moray.

But rowan isn't just beautiful. It has a long history in Scottish folklore and was traditionally believed to bring good luck and protection. Rowan trees were planted near homes and carried as protection against witches and evil spirits.

There was even an old belief that a particularly heavy crop of berries meant a harsh winter was on its way!

Whether you believe the old stories or not, there is something rather magical about seeing these brilliant red berries appearing across the countryside at this time of year.

And soon the larches will be turning their spectacular golden yellow – another wonderful sign that autumn has arrived in Moray.

September is beginning to arrive at Blervie House, and with it comes one of our favourite times of year.

The first signs of autumn are appearing across Moray. Rowan trees are covered in brilliant red berries, the harvest is underway and the larches will soon begin turning their wonderful golden yellow.

September is such a beautiful month to explore Scotland. The summer crowds begin to disappear, the countryside takes on its autumn colours and there is still plenty of time to enjoy walks, castles, beaches, whisky distilleries and the spectacular scenery of the Highlands.

Here in Moray, we are fortunate to enjoy a wonderfully mild climate, making September an excellent time to explore the area.

If you're thinking about a Scottish escape this autumn, we'd love to welcome you to Blervie House.

We've written more about why September is such a wonderful time to visit Scotland in our latest blog, September in Scotland – Why Autumn is One of the Best Times to Visit Moray and the Scottish Highlands here https://blervie.com/september-in-scotland/

A house with a story. A stay that feels like home.

We were delighted to receive this lovely review from recent guests:

“What a wonderful and unique place to stay. The house is absolutely amazing, as are the hosts Sheena & Graham, who've thought of absolutely everything.”

They also mentioned the breakfast, the feeling of staying somewhere rather special, and how much they wished they could have stayed longer.

That is exactly what we hope for at Blervie House.

We aren't a conventional hotel. We are a historic country house, full of character and the little details that make a stay memorable — with a warm welcome, a proper Scottish breakfast and plenty of space to relax.

And with so much to explore across Moray and the Highlands, we're a wonderful base for discovering this beautiful part of Scotland.

There are places that you visit, and there are places that stay with you long after you've returned home.

The Scottish Highlands have a wonderful way of slowing life down. Whether it's standing on a quiet beach listening to the waves, watching the light change across the hills, enjoying a peaceful woodland walk or simply stopping to admire a spectacular view, it's often the simplest moments that become the most memorable.

One of the things our guests tell us time and again is that they arrive with a long list of places they want to visit, but some of their favourite memories come from discovering somewhere unexpected or taking time to simply enjoy the scenery.

The Highlands reward those who slow down, look a little closer and leave room for the unexpected.

What is your favourite place in the Scottish Highlands? We'd love to hear about the places that have stayed with you long after your visit.

Why stay in Moray instead of just driving through?

Many visitors pass through Moray on their way to somewhere else.

Those who stay a little longer discover something rather special.

Ancient castles, dramatic coastlines, quiet woodland walks, world-famous whisky distilleries, friendly towns and villages, and a pace of life that encourages you to slow down.

Blervie House is perfectly placed to explore everything the Highlands and Moray Speyside have to offer, while returning each evening to the comfort of a peaceful country house.

Sometimes the best journeys begin by deciding not to rush.

Where would you spend an extra day if you had the time?

Off the Beaten Track – Rait Castle

One of the things I enjoy most is helping our guests discover places they might never have found on their own.

Just a short drive from Blervie House lies the atmospheric ruins of Rait Castle, one of Moray's lesser-known historic treasures. Dating back to the 13th century, it has stood quietly in the countryside for centuries and is surrounded by fascinating local legends.

Whether you enjoy history, photography or simply exploring somewhere a little different, it's well worth seeking out. There's something rather special about standing beside ancient stone walls and imagining the people and stories they have witnessed over hundreds of years.

It's places like this that remind me that some of the best experiences aren't always the busiest or the most famous. Sometimes they're simply waiting to be discovered.

One of our favourite places to recommend to guests staying at Blervie House.

One of the things I love most about life at Blervie House is the sense of peace that surrounds us.

Looking out across the grounds and seeing the horses quietly grazing is a reminder to slow down and enjoy the moment.

Many of our guests come to explore Moray Speyside, visit distilleries, walk on beautiful beaches or discover our castles and historic sites. But it's often these quieter moments that stay with them long after they've returned home.

Sometimes all it takes is a peaceful view, the sound of birdsong and the chance to simply sit back and appreciate the countryside.

One of the pleasures of living in Moray Speyside is being surrounded by so many wonderful local producers.

While our area is famous for world-class whisky, we’re also fortunate to have some exceptional local gins. One of our favourites is Red Door Gin, distilled just a few miles away in our nearest town of Forres.

We even use it to create one of our popular desserts - our Gin & Tonic Cheesecake- giving guests the opportunity to enjoy another delicious taste of Moray Speyside.

Supporting local businesses has always been important to us, and introducing our guests to some of the fantastic food and drink produced on our doorstep is all part of the Blervie House experience.

Have you tried Scottish gin? We’d love to hear your favourite.
