When it comes to naming your child, there are so many factors that can influence a decision for a name. You may have a family tradition, a cultural obligation, a desire to create something unique, or you may be embracing the resurgence of 'old fashioned' names.

Try out the name in different situations. Could it work in business? Will it cause issues at school? Will it put them in the frame for unwanted attention? It really is a minefield, and so you just have to do your best.

Whatever you choose, celebrate it in style and with all of your loved ones present and have a naming ceremony to remember!

DID YOU KNOW?

You can hold a naming ceremony for your child no matter how old they are! It's all about welcoming them into the family, and so if they are siblings and you are waiting to involve all of your children, that's great! Likewise, if you've adopted or blended a family, we can create a beautiful celebration for you all and acknowledge their place in the family.

We can involve grandparents, supporting adults, new friends, include a commemorative activity, and have you all sign a family certificate too.

As a mum of twins, I know how all-consuming it can be to be managing multiples, and all of the challenges that come with two sets of requirements at the same time.

When it comes to celebrating the arrival of multiples, we always encourage our families to select different guide parents for each child, and for them to have a separate focus so that they are recognised as individuals.

The ceremony will be reflected on for years afterwards, and if filmed by family members, will be a wonderful memento of their childhood that they can look back on.

To be able to look back and see that they were celebrated separately, but as a family ceremony, is a wonderful gift, and we have lots of ideas of ways in which this can be done.

We make it fun, memorable and full of wonderful moments to treasure.

Parents often ask us when the best time to celebrate is, and to be honest, we work with little ones as young as a month old, but they can be as old as 10!

In the case of the latter, they are often older siblings that are involved or are part of a blended family.

However you want to celebrate, do it when it is right for your family, and make it personal and meaningful to you.

Naming someone is often a really tough decision. Some of our families name their children after relatives, or even themselves, and if this is a family tradition then it can make the whole process a lot easier, but what if it isn't?

How do you make sure your child has a name that suits them, their future selves, and that fits in the World that they will be growing up in? It's an almost impossible task!

Many families are now opting to generate their own names, sometimes by merging family names, sometimes by referencing people that inspire them. It could be that you use a season that they are born in to help shape their name, or even maybe taking inspiration from their star sign (if you are so inclined).

Whatever you decide, and however you reach this decision, think about how it will be used in their life, whether it is a name that they can stand proudly behind, and what if they choose to change it later on.

There's a lot to consider, but an awful lot of help and guidance out there, online and in books too.

Did you know that if you have a Christening, your 'God Parents' need to be church goers too?!

If you are considering a non-religious alternative, then you can call them anything you like, and there are no restrictions in terms of their beliefs either. They can indeed be religious, but equally if they are not, this is absolutely fine with a celebrant-led naming ceremony.
