Belle View Holiday Cottage Weardale

Belle View Holiday Cottage Weardale Set on the moors 2 miles above Frosterley in Weardale, Co Durham offering comfortable dog-friendly accommodation. Sleeps 3.

One child over 6, unable to accommodate infants. Belle View Cottage was lovingly converted 30 years ago from old farm buildings. The owners, Phil and Sue, live in the adjoining house and are keen walkers. The area is stunningly beautiful and full of industrial heritage from the lead mines and quarries in the area, as well as rich in wildlife - we have had many types of birds in the garden includin

g Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Woodcock and Cuckoos, with Grouse on the moor around us. The moors are also home to sheep, and its great fun to welcome the lambs in spring. Bollihope Burn runs below the house and offers lovely walks to the Forgotten Quarry. Just one of many quiet walks in the area, and Phil is always happy to suggest a route to suit you, whether you want a short amble, some sightseeing or are tackling longer routes - for example up to Pawlaw Pike and the Elephant Trees which can be walked from the door. We are also near to long distance paths: The Weardale Way and the Northern Saints Trail. The cottage sleeps 3 people (one king, one single room) and includes WiFi (although we are in a rural location, so its not speedy), dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, towels, bed linen, 43” television, Blu-Ray DVD player and Wii, plus there is parking for two cars. We welcome guests with up to two well-behaved dogs (no extra charge), and you can use the main garden as well as the small private cottage garden which also has a barbecue. The local village of Frosterley 2 miles away has a small art gallery, fish and chip shop and a Co-op. The villages of Stanhope and Wolsingham are about 5 miles away, and have a few more shops including a butcher, cafes, pubs and restaurants. A little further afield you can visit Beamish Open Air Museum (we have discount vouchers for our guests), Hadrian’s Wall, Raby Castle, Barnard Castle and High and Low Force in Teesdale. Durham, Newcastle, Gateshead and the Durham Coast are all within easy reach.

On our foray over to Cow Green yesterday we saw this lapwing. I know, not particularly uncommon up here at this time of year, but great to get a shot as it stood still. We then realised it had 3 chicks running around. We didn't approach, stayed on the path and just watched them.

Its become a bit of a tradition - this time of year we go up to Cow Green reservoir in Teesdale to see the Spring Gentians (only found in Teesdale, the Burren and the alps).

It was a glorious sunny day, if slightly breezy, and the reservoir looked spectacular. There were lots of gentians to see this year, particularly compared to last year when we struggled to spot any.

You can continue the walk along the nature trail to Cauldron Snout.

A lovely day out.
