A Piece of History Returns Home to Newcastle

And it’s only minutes from your stay at Ramada Encore.

A rare Union Flag flown from HMS Royal Sovereign during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 has officially been saved for the nation — and it’s coming home to Newcastle, where Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood was born and where many of his crew, the “Tars of the Tyne,” hailed from.

Thanks to an incredible campaign led by North East Museums, over two‑thirds of the £700,000 needed has been raised to secure the flag and create a permanent display at the Discovery Museum, just across the river from us.

This historic flag — made by sailors aboard the Royal Sovereign and flown during one of Britain’s most decisive naval victories — was at risk of being sold overseas until an export bar gave UK institutions time to act. Now, it will stay in the North East, where Collingwood lived, worshipped, and later became one of the region’s greatest (and often under‑celebrated) heroes.
