The cannon on Battery Parade in Whitby is a 12-pounder gun that was recovered from the wreck of the steamer "African Transport" and placed here in 1986. It serves as a reminder of Whitby's past as a fortified port and its role in the town's defences during the Napoleonic Wars.

There is a local story that the diver who found the cannon donated it because his partner did not want it in their front garden. We are not sure if this is an old legend or if it might actually be true.

The Hole of Horcum is located on the A169 between Whitby and Pickering. It is a notable landmark along the route across the Moors.

It's often called the "Devil's Punchbowl." According to local legend, Wade the Giant made the hole when he grabbed a handful of earth to throw at his wife during an argument. Missing her, it landed and formed Blakey Ridge.

In reality, the Hole of Horcum was formed by springs acting along the boundary of two rock layers. Water from springs and rain seeps through porous rock, gradually eroding and enlarging the hollow over thousands of years.

🌿 Why the North York Moors might be the UK’s most beautiful national park 🌊

There’s beauty in breadth here, starting with the astonishing variety of landscapes in this one place. Within a relatively compact area you’ll find rolling heather moorland, deep wooded dales, bubbling rivers and one of England’s most dramatic coastlines. From cliff edges that sweep out to the North Sea to open moor tops with views that stretch for miles, every direction feels like a new discovery.

This diversity of scenery supports a remarkable mosaic of habitats, teeming with life. Rare wildlife thrives here, from moorland birds like merlin and curlew to tiny creatures in bogs, streams, forests and shorelines. It’s nature in every form, shaped by geology, geography and centuries of human care.

But beauty here isn’t just about nature; it’s about history too. Ancient stone crosses, Iron Age forts, ruined abbeys and old fishing villages tell stories that stretch back thousands of years. Everywhere you walk, the landscape is alive with heritage, shaped by the people who lived, worked and wandered here long before us.

What makes the North York Moors truly special is the feeling of escape. Away from the bustle of towns and cities, you can lose yourself in wild open skies, quiet riverside walks, hidden waterfalls, forest paths and heather-covered expanses. At night, the darkness deepens, revealing thousands of stars. It is a reminder of just how wild this place still feels.

And there’s more to it than scenery. The National Park’s vision is a living one: safeguarding nature, enhancing biodiversity, celebrating heritage and uplifting our wellbeing. It’s a place not just to see, but to feel. This is a landscape that calms the mind and stirs the imagination.

Whether you’re hiking, cycling, beach-combing or simply listening to the wind on the moor, the North York Moors remind us why wild beauty still matters. ✨
