🏛️ | The Grosvenor Story – Part 3

This week we're stepping back to 1938–1960 – a fascinating period of change for Glasgow and the West End.

By the late 1930s, the world was changing rapidly. Glasgow was still a powerhouse of industry and engineering, but the West End was developing its own identity, with the University, Kelvingrove Park, the Botanic Gardens and Byres Road at the heart of a growing and increasingly lively neighbourhood.

And 1938 was a particularly important year for us – Grosvenor Terrace officially became home to The Grosvenor Hotel, opening its doors just in time for Glasgow's Empire Exhibition. What had begun as an elegant Victorian terrace in 1858 was becoming one of the West End's best-known landmarks.

The years that followed brought war, post-war change and a new era for Glasgow. Meanwhile, the West End continued to evolve, with the University expanding and the area developing the distinctive mix of culture, architecture and community that makes it so special today.

This chapter of The Grosvenor Story, illustrated by local West End artist Libby Walker, captures some of those changing times – and the people, places and moments that have made the hotel part of Glasgow's story.
