About the Role
As a Senior Care Assistant, you will help lead the care team on shift, ensuring residents receive safe, respectful and personalised support. You will work closely with nurses, care staff, residents, families and visiting professionals to promote wellbeing and maintain excellent standards of care.
Main Responsibilities
Support residents with personal care, mobility, meals, hydration and daily routines.
Lead, encourage and supervise care assistants during shifts.
Promote dignity, choice, independence and respect at all times.
Assist with care planning, risk assessments and accurate record keeping.
Administer or support with medication in line with training, policy and procedures.
Recognise and report changes in residents’ health, wellbeing or behaviour.
Build positive relationships with residents, relatives and colleagues.
Help maintain a safe, clean and homely environment.
Support new team members and contribute to ongoing good practice.
Essential Qualifications
Registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), or willingness and eligibility to register within the required timeframe.
SVQ Social Services and Healthcare at SCQF Level 7, or willingness to work towards it if not already achieved.
Relevant moving and handling, medication, adult support and protection, infection prevention, and health and safety training.
Good understanding of the SSSC Codes of Practice, person-centred care, dignity, choice, confidentiality, and safeguarding responsibilities.
Willingness to undergo enhanced PVG checks and provide satisfactory references.

Relevant Experience
Previous experience working in an elderly care home, residential care, nursing care, dementia care, or a similar adult social care setting.
Experience supporting older people with personal care, mobility, nutrition, hydration, continence care, medication support, and daily living activities.
Ability to lead a shift, allocate duties, support care staff, and ensure care plans are followed accurately.
Experience completing care records, risk assessments, incident reports, handovers, and communication with families, nurses, GPs, social workers, and other professionals.
Confidence recognising changes in residents’ health, wellbeing, behaviour, or capacity and escalating concerns appropriately.
Key Skills and Personal Qualities
Compassionate, respectful, and reliable approach to caring for older people.
Strong communication skills with residents, relatives, colleagues, and external professionals.
Ability to remain calm under pressure and make safe, practical decisions during a shift.
Good organisation, time management, and attention to detail.
Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and maintaining residents’ independence and quality of life.
Willingness to complete continuous professional learning and keep knowledge up to date.
Desirable Experience
Experience supporting residents living with dementia, frailty, sensory impairment, palliative care needs, or long-term health conditions.
Previous responsibility for administering or supervising medication in line with the home’s policy.
Experience mentoring new care assistants or supporting staff induction and training.
Knowledge of Care Inspectorate expectations and quality standards within Scottish care homes.

Provide emotional support and reassurance to residents and their families, fostering positive relationships built on trust and empathy.
Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain a clean, comfortable, and safe living environment for all residents.
Follow all care plans, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and best practice.
