The full Finnich family portrait.
Mum looking proud as anything. Three wee ones tucked in around her, all soft wool and curious faces. They've only been here a couple of weeks and they already act like they own the place. To be fair, they kind of do.
Spring on the estate has officially started. 🌿✨

Picture-perfect Finnich. The red sandstone, the moss, the gorse, and our resident pheasant doing what he does best. Posing.
This is the estate in spring. Everything coming back to life, every corner of the 220 acres putting on a show, and the wildlife acting like they own the place. To be honest, they do. We just look after the cottages. πŸŒΏπŸ”οΈ

Conic Hill on the right, the sweep of moorland rolling away to meet the sky, the light doing what it does best in this part of Scotland. From the cottages you're about 15 minutes from the start of the climb and a couple of hours from the most famous view in the national park.
Walk the hill by day. Coorie in by the wood-fired hot tub by night. That's the Finnich formula. πŸŒΏπŸ”οΈ

Walked past this old beech a hundred times this winter. Today I actually stopped and looked.
The moss has wrapped itself around the base like a velvet skirt, the brightest green you'll see in March, climbing up the silver bark inch by inch. Copper leaves still scattered around the roots from last autumn. The whole thing looking like something out of a storybook.
The estate's quietest residents do their best work when nobody's watching. 🌿πŸ”₯

Five stars from the other side of the world.
Our guests came from Hawaii, stayed in Oak Cottage, and got up early enough to see an owl at half five in the morning. They told us that in Hawaiian culture, the owl is sacred and brings great fortune. They were over the moon about it.
We hear the owls most nights here. They call from the old oaks, sometimes right above the hot tubs. But reading this review made me hear them differently. What's familiar to us was magical for someone else.
That's the best part of hosting. Seeing this place through new eyes. 🌿πŸ”₯

Spring is officially here and the estate is putting on a show.
Crocuses, daffodils, blackthorn blossom, cherry plum in full pink. All in the same week. All within a few minutes' walk of the cottages.
You don't need to go anywhere to see it.
Just step outside, look down, look up, and it's everywhere. 🌿✨

Morning rounds and there he was. Same spot on the hill, same steady gaze, watching the estate through the mist like he's been doing it for years. Because he has.
He doesn't miss a thing. The deer crossing the lower field at dawn, the buzzard circling overhead, me walking the path with a coffee. He clocks it all from up there without moving a muscle. Calm, alert, completely in charge.
The fog was thick through the pines this morning and he just sat there like a painting. The real keeper of the estate. 🌿πŸ”₯

There's a beech tree on the estate path that I must walk past fifty times a week. Today I actually stopped and looked at it properly.
The trunks have fused together over the years into this unusual shape, the bark worn pale and smooth in places, dark where the rain sits, and the moss climbing up from the base in the brightest green you'll see in March. Lichen dotted across the silver bark like paint splatter. All of it just quietly doing its thing while we rush past.
Spring doesn't arrive with a fanfare here. It starts small. The moss, the buds, the light lasting a wee bit longer each day. You notice it when you slow down. 🌿

March jobs on the estate.
Check the cottages, stack the hot tub logs, stuff the wool dispensers.
That last one is my favourite. We take fleece from our own sheep, pack it into wee wire feeders, and hang them near the nest boxes. The great t**s arrive within minutes.
There's something about watching this that makes the whole season feel real. The birds aren't waiting for the calendar. They're building. Spring is here. 🌿

Forget the weather forecast. If you want to know when spring is arriving, ask the birds.
First week of March and the dawn chorus on the estate is the loudest it's been since last autumn. I stood by the old oaks with Merlin running on my phone and watched the species stack up one by one. Robin. Wren. Great tit. Chaffinch. A song thrush going through his whole repertoire like he was auditioning for something.
Still cold, still grey some mornings. But that sound? That's spring loading. The gorse will be next, then the ospreys, then those long evenings that make you forget what time it is. It all starts with the birds. 🌿
If you don't know Merlin Bird ID yet, download it before your next visit. Free, works offline, and it'll show you exactly who's singing around
you.https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/
