Five things your body will thank you for this summer
1. Honour midday. The Heart's energy peaks at noon. A ten-minute pause — eyes closed, slow breath — is one of the simplest, most effective things you can do for the Heart all summer.
2. Cool from the inside. Cucumber, watermelon, mint, courgette, lettuce, mung bean and bitter greens cool gently. Iced drinks paradoxically weaken the Spleen — warm or room-temperature water is kinder.
3. Sleep with the sun. Bed earlier, rise earlier. Summer is the one season TCM allows a later bedtime, but only if you also rise with first light. The Heart needs the dark hours to settle.
4. Move, gently. Walk in the cool of morning or evening, swim, dance, garden. The aim is enjoyment — not exhaustion — which is exactly the Heart's medicine.
5. Joy is a treatment. The Heart's emotion is joy. Time with loved ones, food shared with others, music, laughter — these aren't extras, they're the season's primary prescription.
Common summer concerns ...
Heat-disturbed sleep, summer anxiety, the irritability that rises with the temperature, skin flare-ups, and the heavy fatigue that comes when humidity rises — all respond well to seasonal acupuncture, which works with rather than against the summer's natural movement. If any of these have been affecting you, this is the ideal time of year to treat them.
