I love summer, but I’ve always thought our little corner of the countryside comes alive the most in the colder months.

I love layering up for chilly dog walks, dewy mornings that feel plucked from a movie, and then cosying up in front of the log burner at any given opportunity.

Our dog-friendly cottages are made for this weather, and we have availability in December for a (well-deserved) pre-Christmas slow down.

And of course, we couldn’t put this post out without recommending a place for the all-important Sunday roast. The Red Hart Inn in Blaisdon is an hour’s walk through the beautiful woodland and is dog friendly too.

It’s a milestone we’re feeling rather proud of here at The Roost Retreats.

When you run an accommodation business, you put so much thought into the experience you want your guests to have. From the retreats themselves to all those little details that you hope will make someone’s stay that bit more special.

And while we know how much we love this little corner of the Forest of Dean, it’s a lovely feeling knowing that the people who come to stay love it just as much.

Especially when so many of you choose to come back again!

Being dog owners ourselves has a lot to do with how we’ve created The Roost Retreats.

Because when you’ve spent years taking your own dogs on holiday, you start to realise which little things make all the difference to a stay.

And those are exactly the things we wanted to make sure we got right.

Of course, we want our guests to enjoy all the luxuries of a lovely cabin getaway, but we also want them to feel completely comfortable bringing their dogs along too.

No worrying about them wandering off, awkward side eyes, or feeling like you have to compromise on the kind of place you’d usually choose to stay here.

May 2027 be the year you tick off ‘staying somewhere with its own nature pool’.

The nature pool was always on my bucket list, as I’m sure it is yours.

…but maybe you didn’t realise a cabin with a sauna, outdoor bath and home cinema was also on your bucket list.

This would be my cosy cabin stay checklist. What would yours be? 🤍

We’re well and truly into cosy cabin season and, to be honest, I’m a little jealous of our guests.

Cold, dewy mornings, but gorgeous autumnal sunshine in the afternoons. Firepit evenings that aren’t freezing, but cold enough to light the log burner when you head back into your cabin.

I know where I’d rather be!

If you know me, you’ll know sustainability has never been something I’ve wanted to shout about just for the sake of looking good. It’s something that has mattered to us from the very beginning.

We’re incredibly lucky to run The Roost in such a beautiful little corner of the Forest of Dean, and with that comes a responsibility to look after it.

For me, the goal has always been to show that choosing to travel a little more thoughtfully doesn’t have to mean compromising on the experience.

You can still have the beautiful cabin, the outdoor bath, the sauna and all those little luxuries you look forward to when you go away, just with a little more thought behind how it all works.

We’re always learning, always looking for ways to do better, and incredibly proud of how far we’ve come.

Sometimes the sound of the countryside is actually all you need.

Here, it really is all about the atmosphere. The birds, the trees, the crackle of the fire and that lovely feeling of being tucked away from everything.

And it’s not just us humans who benefit from it.

If you have a dog who’s slightly anxious or reactive, you’ll know how much difference a peaceful location can make. Fewer people passing by, less noise and less going on around them means they can properly settle into their stay too.

And when the pup is relaxed, you can relax a little more too.

It’s officially cosy cottage season, and an appropriate time to confess I love this time of year… perhaps a little bit more than summer 🫣

The crackle of the log burner, fuzzy blankets, feeling a little less guilty for staying in because the weather is miserable.

At our dog friendly cottages, you can do all of that, but with the added luxury of a sauna and a dip in the nature pool. Not your average cottage stay.

We only have December dates left in our cottages for the rest of 2026, and we’d love to welcome you.

We’re officially down to our final 2 cabin stays for 2026.

And luckily, they both fall at one of my favourite times of year here at The Roost.

The Nook: 7th-9th October
The Nest: 9th-11th November

Think log burners lit, evenings around the firepit, hot outdoor soaks and sauna sessions after a day exploring the Forest of Dean with the dog.

And there really is nowhere better to wake up than here on a crisp, frosty autumn morning.

A secure garden is probably one of the first things we all look for when booking somewhere with the dog. And of course, every one of our retreats has one.

But we’ve always felt that should be the starting point of dog friendly accommodation, rather than the thing that defines it.

For us, it’s about thinking beyond the four walls (and fences!) of your retreat. What will make travelling with your dog easier? What will they need while they’re here? Where can you walk together? Where can you eat together?

We want the whole experience of staying at The Roost to feel genuinely dog friendly, from the moment you arrive to the places you can explore together while you’re here.

Of course, a secure garden is important, but we just don’t think dog friendly should end there.
