We are saddened to learn that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022, peacefully at Balmoral.

We have been greatly touched to receive lovely messages from around the world from past guests on whom The Queen had made such a lovely impression. Many of them had visited Balmoral, or attended the Braemar gathering and had seen her during their visits to Scotland.

R.I.P. Your Majesty.

We are always grateful to be so lucky to live in this peaceful place, but never more so than this week as we see the terrible aggression being brought by Russia to Ukraine.
We have no words which adequately cover how we feel but our hearts are breaking for Ukraine's brave, brave people.

We have been shocked and saddened by the dreadful flooding across Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. Over the past 13 years many, many of our guests at The Dulaig have come from these areas.

Our thoughts and very best wishes are with all affected.

Surprise ducklings at The Dulaig!

At this time of year we expect ducklings to arrive at our pond and they are always gorgeous but this mum who clearly knows us has two extra- special little ones .... they are completely black!

We have had hundreds of ducklings here over the years and, as you can see in one of the pictures, are in the process of repairing the pond edge worn out by the padding of all those duck feet.

We have never seen ducklings which look like these wee babies. We and - our guests - will be watching closely to see how their feathers develop.

An Easter story with a (hopefully) happy ending at The Dulaig!

Neighbours called us last week to ask if we had lost a hen as one was roaming the streets and roosting in neighbours' gardens. None of our girlies was missing but we joined the efforts to catch her and put out alerts to try to trace her owner. A real fast- mover the stray outwitted all of us, eventually flying high up into the trees and roosting. A couple of days later came another call - she was in a neighbour's shed - and this time we managed to catch her......eventually! Our neighbour suggested we call her "Houdini" but we suggested we name her after his daughter who was at the "rescue" and so she became "Harriet": the little hen was afraid and not too happy with us at all.
After dark a few nights ago, having kept her away from our girls, we popped Harriet into the henhouse with her new sisters and got up at 6am in case of fighting (to sort "the pecking order") when the hens met. We needn't have worried. Within a few minutes and only minimal scuffling it was sorted and Harriet was one of the flock, our easiest introduction of new hens ever. She even laid an egg in the henhouse.
For now, in case Harriet simply flies off again when let loose, we are keeping all our hens in the covered run where they have been for months due to be national restrictions : they were due to be "freed" on 1 April but another wee while in lockdown won't bother them.
Harriet seems content with her new sisters and though it may take her a while to like us we are hopeful that she will be happy to stick around here.

Happy Easter from all of us - feathered or not - here at The Dulaig. We are so looking forward to being able to welcome you once again. Who knows, you may even be lucky to have an egg from Harriet the Easter Hen for breakfast!

We are honoured that The Dulaig is an "Editor's Choice" B&B in the 2021 Good Hotel Guide, THE completely independent guide to hotels and B&Bs. The Guide's editors are looking for reviews for its next British edition.

Can you help by sending in a review of somewhere you have stayed whether at The Dulaig or elsewhere? There is a link below you can click but it does not have to be a great long description, just a brief e-mail will do if you prefer and you might even win a hotel stay as a prize! Here is some more information from The Good Hotel Guide team....and information on their excellent Gift Voucher scheme too.

Appeal for reviews
Dear Good Hotel Guide reader,
Reviews from readers are the lifeblood of the Guide. As we start work on the 2022 edition, we would like to get reviews about places you have stayed in over the past year. The Guide’s reliability depends on up-to-date reports. We also welcome reviews on places that are not in the Guide or have been omitted.
Each month a prize of a night’s stay for two including dinner and breakfast in one of our selected hotels is given for the best review. We also have a Report of the Year competition in which a dozen of our best correspondents win a copy of the Guide and an invitation to our annual launch party in October.
Please write to us at 50 Addison Avenue, London W11 4QP or click https://www.goodhotelguide.com/submit-review/. We will send a personal acknowledgement for every report that we receive.

Just a short walk from The Dulaig door is a huge network of countryside walks, some through beautiful woods or alongside the and others are on the open hillsides.

A picture does paint a thousand words so here are a few photos to give you a little peek at our walk today, just up behind our house to Gorton Hill. These magical views across to The and Cromdale hills open up very quickly.

What a glorious afternoon!

In our 12 years as The Dulaig B&B we can honestly say we have only ever served our guests our own home-made bread (apart from gluten-free as the bought version is a better texture than we have managed so far!), always with our own home-made jams and marmalades too.

We are still unable to open due to Covid restrictions but to celebrate Real Bread Week - thanks to our friends at Scotland's Best B&Bs for the reminder - here are just a few of our favourites - Bloomer (with home-made rhubarb & vanilla jam), Naan, English muffins, Sourdough and Brioche with poppy seeds.

Mmmmm.....anyone feeling hungry?

Our first of this winter at The Dulaig B&B, after a frosty night (below -6C).

For the third year Pat, the female wild mallard duck on our frozen pond, has kept a wee duck-sized hole ice-free. What a girl!!!
